Buying 07 MK5 with 99K miles, bad idea?
« on: January 16, 2013, 11:10:24 am »
Hi all, new here and currently own a MK4 1999 with 100k miles on it gun metal grey, nice car but want something newer.

I am in the market for a MK5 but with a budget of £7,000 the ones I am looking at have highish mileage.

Specifically I have found a black magic mk5, 5dr, VW FSH, 1 owner, 2007 plate, 99k miles, immaculate exterior/interior condition, 12 months MOT/TAX, just serviced and had new spark plugs. It was advertised for £7,500 but I got it down to £5,800 p/x with my MK4.

Is that a good deal and should I be wary about the 99k miles? I have read elsewhere that these cars can do much more than that and at least with higher mileage it would have had major things (timing belt/pump) already done (which it has).

Thanks for reading, I may buy tomorrow.

New coils probably .

Service history is the make or break on this i think and as its all VW i would have it .

Don't rush into it . It will be 100k in no time and there are only a few people who buy cars over this mileage. So consider when you might sell , if 3 years plus then go for it . Otherwise find one you can use and sell while the mileage remains under 100k .

There are plenty about under 100k . For a 07 its good value though

It sounds good for the mileage. Check it's had an oil & filter change every 10k miles. The engine is where I'd be most concerned - if it's been looked after it'll be fine. All other bits - discs, pads etc. are easy & cheap to replace.

Shock absorbers may not last you too much longer so you'll likely have to factor that in at some stage.

100K is nothing for a modern German car, providing it has been looked after. I bought mine at 85K, but what I was more interested in was the service history. A quick call to the VW owner responsible for maintaining it confirmed the sole previous owner had been fastdious in his upkeep of the car, and everything had been done to the letter in line with VAG's schedule. Alex @ Storm took a good look over it and under it when he gave it a big service and confirmed it was an incredibly good example, so if you can get someone to do that before you buy, all the better.

Thanks, it is worth noting that I do hardly any miles as I work from home so the mileage wont go up in the year or 2 I plan on keeping it and I am not fussed about losing some money on it as all cars lose money as they get older. I am also thinking I should check what miles these are because it would be better if they were motorway miles. The dealer says he got it from VW in Kent, which may or may not be true but it has had no mods and looks immaculate so I trust it has been looked after well. It's in for a service now, perhaps I will test drive it tomorrow and go from there.

Mileage means nothing as long as its been driven and maintained well. Mines is in the for sale bit. Has 93,500 miles. Full VW service history. All the extras apart from DSG & sunroof. Immaculate inside and out and has lots of problem parts replaced. Up for £6750. Have a look :)

Yes it might be a early one but if I was looking into one this is what I'd be looking at purely for its condition and spec.
If mine wasn't on finance I'd sell mine and buy this myself. Stick a private plate on it and who knows its a 54 plate.

There is no issue with 99k miles, but people do seem to shy away from cars with over 100k when it comes to selling. If the market place is flooded at the time you go to sell it, it will be hard to shift.
