Lets talk tyres
« on: January 19, 2013, 09:49:52 am »
Need 2 fronts very soon, although my rears are like new they are piss poor budgets, so i'm going to be replacing all 4.
Now which tyres to choose? Been seeing very good reviews on goodyear eagle F1 asymetric 2's which i can get £100 a corner @ camskill. Is there any tyre out there better for the money? Heard amazing things about the new michelins.
I want a tyre that grips just as good in the wet as it does in the dry

I'm a big fan of the Goodyear F1 Assy 2's, been running them since they came out in 2010 and ran the Assy 1's before them for 2 years.

I've never owned a set of Michelin PS's or the PS2/3/5 varieties nor any Conti's but I've driven plenty of cars with them fitted and they all seemed good.

£100 each is a good price too, what's the size and loading on those?

I went for the conti sport all round as it was highly recommended by my local tyre expert (no not kwik fit!), seems to be good, quite quiet, 'A' grade for stopping distance, reported to last circa 18k unless you cain it and 260 for the pair fitted and balanced...

Not sure which loading i need for the GTI ?

I tend to go for the 92Y rated tyres in the goodyears but they do quite a few ratings which would be suitable depending on what your car carries and how fast or how much power you use

if it's only yourself in the car or maybe 1 passenger then the 88 load rating will be fine, if like me you regularly carry 4 passengers and a lot of kit about then opting for a XL load rating will be better say 92 - 95

The speed rating is a dubious one to me but putting decent power through a H rated tyre can only lead to issues even if that tyre is 130MPH rated??  I tend to look at the V,W or Y ratings as being better able to handle the torque my car can put through them.

Will go for the V/W/Y ratings then considering i'm quite harsh on tyres

Any other recommendations?

Just had a year on the Continental SC5's... Would go for them again but fancied the Goodyears to try, so have ordered 4 from Camskill, £419 delivered for 225/40/R18 92y... Supposed to be delivered yesterday but delayed due to the snow...
