talk to me about lowering the edition 30......
« on: July 09, 2009, 01:17:39 pm »
I have resisted this for a while but I feel its time to start 'weighing' up the options.
dan.payne and SteveP have both fitted H&R 30mm drop springs with OE dampers to good effect.
>> dans lowered ED30 + spacers

The options are

1. Springs only (use OE dampers) (£200 + fitting)
2. Spring + Damper set (£500 + fitting)
3. Coilovers (£700)

The car is remapped with WALKit , my journeys are primarily road based commuting with occasional 'fun' drag strip / track days etc.
So the balance must remain to be OE like and cannot be too low.
Obviously with ££££ I would go coilovers but I reckon I dont need them.

I am currently erring towards the H&R kit using the OE dampers as it seems a good compromise.
I'm interested to hear peoples views.

1. Why are H&R (£230) so much more expensive compared to Eibach/a.n.other springs (£130) ??? and are they worth it?
2. What drop ? Interestingly VWR spring kit only drops by 15mm! common drops are 30 or 40mm
3. Anyone else change the topmounts (for new OE ones) whilst your at it?
4. Should I consider moving up to a matched spring/damper set OR even coilovers?

thanks
John

I've got option 1. Eibach Pro plus original Sachs dampers. It's perhaps not low enough for some, but I like it and the ride and handling have improved. - be sure to get a good alignment job done after.

I need to have a go in Flora's to give some accurate feedback but I don't get why the H&R's are so much more than Eibach's?

Saying that they are much cheaper from Orange Tuning!

For reference:

Eibach Pro-Kit
Standard Dampers
10mm Hubcentric Spacers

= Tough Stance IMO!

I've never been a fan of running uprated springs with OE dampers, but because funds are a bit tight and I got the H&R springs cheap I thought I'd give it a try and am pleasantly suprised with the results. I figured that the dampers are so new they will last a while and if they get tired I'll change them then. I will probably change the dampers to some Bilstein's or similar in time.
I used the Eibach springs on my mk5 with there own dampers and they were pretty good, but I do rate the H&R springs :happy2:

I ran the Eibach coilovers on the GTI just as Hurdy is and for the money I thought they were top notch, if money was no object I'd probably go for some KW's or Bilstein coilovers.

How many miles has your car done now John, might be worth trying just the springs and maybe changing the dampers at a later date? although you do have to fit twice then

Greenouse : eibachs look great and yeah havent seen a concrete reason for the price premium yet!
Gaz : 24k miles so still fresh ish, so yes Im tempted to just do springs. Who knows what happens next year

My car is on eibach springs and standard dampers, never had a problem with them yet and love the ride.

basically, it doesnt feel like its killing the dampers every time you hit a bump, far from it.

Im sure the VW dampers on these Mk5's are upto the job of handling tougher spring rates etc. Its A VW at the end of the day.

Ride quality IMO is not far from how mine felt with the standard setup.

It was all about the stance and look for me :rolleye:

I've just brought the H&R springs for mine; I couldn't be bothered with coilovers due to its mainly going to be used on road so the premium for a decent set far out weighed the benefits. I can't comment on the H&R's yet due to having them fitted next Friday but if you’re still in limbo I'll put my first impressions on here.

As for the cost they can be had from orange tuning for £170 I think and mine came within 3 days of being ordered which is tip top for saying they came from Germany.
