How many have had DSG issues?
« on: January 22, 2013, 01:50:01 pm »
I'm in the market for a GTI, and after driving a few DSG's decided thats what i wanted. My budget will probably get me a 2006/2007 and most seem to have between 50-80k miles.

I've been reading on a few forums that most would stay away from a DSG of that age without a warranty.

Whats your thoughts, and how many have actually had DSG problems and what bills did you face?

Cheers!

Those advising to stay away basically prefer manuals or have not had DSG.

I have had mine for 15 months without issue, it was repaired (Mechatronics) under warranty by VW free of charge before I bought it, there was a batch of 07-08 cars that seem to have been affected, would not worry about it personally.

most cars would of had by now replacement Mechs units as it tended to affect cars in the early days.

symptoms would be slow selecting reverse gear, or jolty 1st and 2nd gear selection, or would could be also described as someone who has bad clutch control when you pull off from a standing start.

I wouldn't buy a GTi or a volkswagon if it didn't have DSG.

Best option in the options list.IMO

I have a 102k mile 2006 Gti with DSG and the box is superbly smooth (even more noticably so after coming from a car with a triple plate clutch!!). I just checked the box had had regular oil changes.

Keeping it original..............or not!!

I'm on 80k and my gearbox is lovely! Don't think I'd ever want anything other than DSG again!

.
I'm on 105k and had a Mechatronics replaced under VW warranty at ~6k. She's an 05-plate 06-spec Mk5 GTI.

Like others here, I wouldn't want ANY car that didn't have DSG or its flappy paddle equivalent.

DSG is the best of both worlds:  Drive automatic in D-mode for urban and traffic jam crawls and pop her into M and Think Manual for everything else.

You have already said you like DSG (a prejudice is the biggest obstacle which most first timers have) so if you don't go for one you'll always be wondering. Of course, some drivers much prefer Manual - ETTO.

As others have posted - Regular DSG oil servicing is important.

DSG is fantastic  :congrats:

I was a little worried before I purchased mine but I have taken out an after market 3 year warranty which covers most of the car, including the precious DSG box.. it only cost me £750 so not a bad price to pay for peace of mind  :happy2:

I've had DSG for 6 years without any problems at all. As others have said would not consider another car without it.

Ive had 5 golfs with DSG;
2006 GTI
2006 R32
2008 ED30
2007 ED30
2011 ED35

I have a the complete gearbox replaced in the R32 at approx 8k for a rattle under warranty, and on the 2007 Ed30, I had the mechatronics replaced for a jolty pull away, which unfortunately I had to pay for.  However, would I have another DSG, Damn right, in my view the best gearbox on the market  :happy2:

Had my car since Aug last year and touch wood the DSG is such a great piece of work. I certainly have had no issues, and prefer it to any other car driven

Miles better than the butter clutches VW fit into the manual cars.

And it can be remapped :popcornsoda:

Tis true. I think if I knew I was going to remap a car in future I'd buy a DSG, knowing I wouldn't have to fork out for a clutch

I meant the gearbox can be remapped but yes you don't have to fork out for a new clutch when going to Stage 1 :signLOL:
