RNS510 Puck antennae
« on: July 10, 2009, 02:12:53 pm »
My sat nav's turned up in the post and I've started on the fitment...only I can't find anything metallic to attach it too. Everything in reach is alloy so the magnet doesn't stick. Everything in the hole where the stereo used to be has been removed and not sure how to remove any more of the dash. Any ideas really appreciated.

Ps. I really want the shark fin so if any one has any tips for removing the roof lining I think that'll be the next task.

I should also add...is there a way to search earlier posts for the same type of questions?? I don't want to waste peoples time if there are already answers on here.

Thanks people :happy2:

Use a double sided sticky pad and stick it to the crash bar.

Thanks hedge...

I'm not afraid to take things apart and put them back together. I knew the insides and out of my old Renault 5 GT turbo but that was through blood sweat and tears. Technical wise and what things are called is another matter, so hence my next stupid question....whats the crash bar and what does it look like.

Thank you.

I can only speak in terms of a Mk2 Octavia as I have not installed the Nav on my Golf but it is the flat piece of alloy that runs across the car just behind the windscreen.

This may help even though it is VRStu's Octavia site.

Ah ha so thats the crash bar...Will set to work immediately.

If you do fit the satnav to your golf you'll find the gaps for the crash bar alot tighter than the VRS so might take a litle prying to fit the puck. I'll take a few pics and post up when finished.

Dajonic,

Have a read through here...it also gives some parts numbers for the antena attachment on the back of the unit.

I thought there was a guide on here, but I can't find it at present, I know several on here have done it.

The roof lining is a real pig of a job too... :chicken: :chicken:
Cheers,

Wayne

As already said a few photos....
All vents, grills, facias and stereo cage removed.

view of the crash bar through the dash.

Cage and climatronic screwed back in.

RNS510 in cage with lower fascia in place and top fan cowl back in place with puck resting on top.

Puck velcroed to plastic fan cowl and lead tidied away.

Everything back in its rightful place and playing music from the HDD.

Finally the sat nav doing what it's supposed to...a map view.

It's about 500metres out so need to find out how to calibrate the unit.

Other than that its certainly not a 25 minute job but is a relatively easy job to do. I'm definately not happy with the pucks location though so will be looking into the shark fin option...roof linig removal and all, but thats defo for another day

Thanks to everyone for there help and suggestions!

Looks like that needs coding.

Hedge, do you know what I have to do to do that? Have VAGCOM and it showed lots of related errors.

This is where I stuck my puck!

Do'h!!! I'm getting between 4 and 7 satellites but your flatter option on the vent flap should improve that. At least it won't take long to rectify tomorrow. :happy2:

Ps not getting the coding ref???

The flat option shows me around 5-6 satellites last time I checked but that was just after I'd installed it. Will have another look tomorrow.

As for coding, you have to tell the car you've changed the head unit.

>clicky< for a list of errors I got after I installed the rns510.

Yep, I had the airbag warning on the dash stay on but was hoping the pixies would get to work in the night and sort that stuff out for the morning  It's getting a major service in a couple of weeks time so they can sort out any vagcom errors found. Thanks for your help.

ps just been looking at the VWRacing website and all their tempting goodies  The saving starts here!

When coded for GTi installation the screen should be red.
