« on: January 27, 2013, 07:09:17 pm »
Im looking to change the front and rear discs and pads on my Ed30.
Can anyone recommend a good quality lowish price set to replace them with?

Thanks!

OEM from a dealer. Ask for 15% discount.

Hmm, surely there are some better compounds than standard?

Tarox Corsa
Ferodo DS2500
Mintex m1144

^^^Of course there are, but the OP didn't mention an upgrade. Also none of those pads are cheap.

I dont mind standard dealer parts or upgraded parts if the price is right..
The Mintex ones on ebay look fairly good value/ not sure the price of OEM discs/pads from the dealers??

Please ignore my 'advice' above...

Why would you ask for advice on brakes if you wanted OEM? I seem to be having problems with my intellect.

D'oh.

Yikes that is cheap, I bet a VW dealer would charge about that for front discs alone!

I need front discs and pads this week, but am undecided whether to go with the above, standard or something a bit different with the :

mTec Grooved: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Golf-GTi-Turbo-mk5-Front-Rear-Drilled-Brake-Discs-Pads-/290510276583?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AVW|Plat_Gen%3AMK+V&hash=item43a3c307e7

Same pads it would seem, just different discs.

Im always dubious about things that are too cheap! Im not sure how good Mintex are as a brand or whether the pads and discs are from the budget range of the Mintex brand.
I dont mean to sound like im teaching anyone to suck eggs but i wouldnt try and go too cheap and stuff like pads and discs (tyres are another one).

Give your local TPS depot a call and see if they have an promotions on brakes and discs. I think i got 25% off last time. Plus, the oem stuff from TPS comes with a 2 year warranty i believe..

Hope this helps

Rich

I know everyone has different experiences, however I've used Mintex on other cars and they were fine, I wouldn't say they were an upgrade but certainly OEM quality.

That said I haven't tried them on the GTI so perhaps the standard OEM compound is better than the Mintex ones.

The devil in me wants to try the grooved discs out  But the sensible head just says keep it standard.  I'm only Stage 1 K03 btw.

If I was stage 1 K04 I'd defo be looking for a better pad upfront at the very least.
