KW Clubsports fitted on my Ed 30 now with pics!
« on: July 10, 2009, 05:35:04 pm »
Following on from a recent trackday at Combe and after consultation from VWR and Awesome I have yet again slid a bit further down the slope by ordering some rather tasty KW Clubsport items from Awesome.

Hopefully they will be arriving next week from Germany for fitment in the near future. I decided on these primarily for greater camber adjustment on the front end when I'm tracking the car. VWR and KW's own advice as that they offer great ride quality and adaptibilty. These should well without a diff but ideally the car will benefit from a Quaiffe at some stage.

Intilally I was going to order the KW3's as having been in a MK5 with these on it was a big step forward from stock and actually more comfortable.

I will post some pictures of the car at some stage but if one of you could or would like to post them on my behalf being a computer technofobe it would make my life easier.

I'm tempted to go the whole hog by putting a big brake set up and going stage 2 with the APR FP and exhaust but I must control myself before get myself in deep water :scared:

Her is a link to a similar kit for the R32:http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=11623&xSec=1070

I decided on these primarily for greater camber adjustment on the front end when tracking the car band also from VWR and KW's own advice as they offer great ride quality and adaptibilty.

These should well without a diff but ideally the car will benefit from a Quaiffe at some stage.

....I'm afraid that great as good coilovers are, the addition of a Quaife diff really ties the package together. A FWD car such as the Mk5 GTI particularly benefits from a diff when remapped and therefore delivering more power to the road. VW have now recognised this and include an electronic XDS diff on the Mk6 GTI.

Modding is a slippery slope!

I did yes...not cheap though but quality counts.

As for the diff....yep I totally agree.....that and brakes are my next jobs with Stage 2 power.....should be finsihed then into a nice package. Should be a great allrounder.

....Yes, I didn't want to frighten you by mentioning the brakes as well but they complete the handling package.

Loadsa money when you add it all up but loadsa of smiles on your face when you have the safe opportunity to drive hard!

Yeah brakes are on the agenda too....it's a huge investment all the work/parts involved but as you say if keeping the car it's worth it. Either that or it remains pretty much standard and save approx 5k in mods. Big decisions :scared:

I did think about going back to a track dedicated car again such a MK2 or Integra but I love the refinement as I'm getting older.

The Golf does the job of both a family car and is fun on track....I've got to way up how often I will track it.

....The only track I've ever driven is a few laps of Nurburgring. Otherwise I get plenty of opportunity for safe but spirited driving on the road and find my suspension/diff/brakes mods totally helpful and enabling as well as very enjoyable. I would even go as far as saying that such mods add to road safety. We are each different but I think it is possible to have one car which is both a family car and fun on track. However, it does depend on how and who defines your 'family' car and also how far you go with it as modded for track.

A stripped out car with roll-cage won't work as a family car but one with a good suspension/diff/brakes package will.

That's why the MK5 is such a flexible package.....it's very refined but still has such a good chassis to do the biz on track.
Keeping it refined this time round is equally important hence why I must be careful on my selection of parts.

If and when I sell the car I can always put it back to OE spec and sell the goodies as people on here I expect would be interested. The map/diff etc would have to remain.

....If and when, I think that the diff would actually be an advantage selling it - The Mk6 has an electronic diff and the Quaife is very low key and not noticeable except when making progress and it gently but strongly comes to your aid. But don't listen to me because I'm sold on the Quaife hook line and sinker! I'm a bad influence and will help you spend all your money!

Quaiffe diff's are superb IMO....I've run them in all of my car's in the last 12 years.

It's only a matter of time....I may plump for an exhaust pump and stage 2 when I'm at Awesome..who know's

KW Clubsports fitted......feel excellent so far on a trip to St Ives :happy2:

They will need tweaking for ride height as they are a bit low for me.

Pics to follow from Awesome

Running just 1.25 degrees negative to keep the front tyres from scrubbing.

Wll do a seperate build thread.....car look very aggressive/chunky especially with the 10mm spacers.

Haven't done any performance evaluation on stock set up.....I may take it to VWR for advice on set up options.

Feels planted but may have a degree more wheel hop but will need to talk with VWR on optimum settings.

....

I'd also consider adding the WALK (Whiteline castors) and changing the bushes to the other side of the wishbones while you're at it. It's an inexpensive but good mod by all accounts.
