New Car...

Well.. as of Friday my wife is 12 weeks pregnant  So we went out to potentially make the most of the January sales and have found out that her Mini One is almost completley useless!! A car seat only just squeeses in between the fron seat and the B Pillar, and the pram will not fit in the boot at all. The only way to get it in the car is lye it down on the flattened down remaining back seat - which I am not happy with! So the next bit of great news is she needs a new car. Looking at putting hers in (£4.5-£5k) and maybe a little on top if reuquired, for something good on juice (doesnt have to be derv, just better than a mk5 gti :-/ ) 5 door , solid, and NOT FRENCH!!

Any other suggestions on top of 2006/7 astra, a3 sportback, MK2 Leon??

Also.. this may have crippled my stage 2 ideas  Just when I have fitted all of the requirements too!! The only thing stopping me is the potential for parts wearing out quicker, mainly the clutch :-(

My wife has a Mk2 Leon - something she wanted, I put my stamp on it too and its more than capable with 2 kids - both young.

Did have to invest in a roofbox for a week away in france and cornwall - just made life easier.

Thank you all for the replies.. I have been showing her all of the options above, and I think she wants an Astra! We have found one at the garage I bought her mini from, so going to have a word with them and see if we can thrash out some sort of deal with them seen as we have only had it 6 months!!!

Have the Leon FR BTCC, can easily fit a pram and shopping in the boot, found it to be larger than my Golf ED30 for space.

I always found that no matter what car we had It was NEVER big enough for all the kids cr*p and us and the kids and the kitchen sink (metaphorically speaking). Our daughter had her own daughter a year ago and the sheer size of the prams, buggies, travel cots, baby car seats nowadays is incredible!

Get a VW Transporter (Caravelle). Some great ones about for that sort of money.

Certainly for the first 6 months, the amount of sh*t you have to cart about is unreal. I didn't want anything in the cabin, so a big boot was essential.

1st child?  Keep the 5 door GTI, use the money you saved on not selling her on fuel.  It's often quite alarming how many miles you'd have to do to recoup the cost of swapping cars with a difference of 5/7 MPG.  Worth a few calculations.
