Pulling off in 1st gear problem. Normal or Not??
« on: January 29, 2013, 07:58:42 am »
Hi guys,

I've posted about this a while back but now i've driven the GTI for longer, I can explain better what the actual problem is...

So lets say im stopped at the traffic lights and im in first gear and my foot in down on the clutch... when its time to pull off obviously I take my foot off the clutch and onto the accelerator... However when I do this I fail to get a smooth pull off.

I either rev the engine too much and then when my foot is fully off the clutch it kinda wants to surge forward to quickly or I get wheel spin in some cases... I also get the same thing if I take my foot off the clutch too quick... OR if I pull off giving it less gas it feels very slightly juddery as though it was going to stall until I give it more on the accelerator...

I just can't seem to get a quick smooth start. What I have to do is very very very slowly take my foot of the clutch while very very very slowly putting my foot on the accelerator accelerator at the same time, by which time its took a few seconds to actually pull off...

i want to be able to pull off quickly without trying to find the perfect balance between clutch and accelerator... Doing my head in now I just can't get used to it! Im not sure if this is how these cars are or if it could be a problem with my clutch etc?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Cheers

Do these cost a lot to replace?

Also dare I ask how much a new clutch would cost?? Lol

well like with anything, it depends what you're after and where you go!? You're probably looking twice as much roughly for an updated clutch than a standard clutch! Either of you anywhere near Sheffield??

Clutch kit with new bearing kit  and fitting I would hazard a guess of around £750..

Leicester area here :-/ I usually take my car to Alex at AKS tuning, so might get a price from him.

£750 though.. ouch... on top of the £2000 I had to spend on the car after i bought it as I was ripped off... I've proper been taken for a ride!

However if it's gonna make it a better ride, I will have to spend it because it is a very very frustrating problem. Especially from a car I thought would be amazing to drive. No wonder i've not actually thought that once yet. Can't wait to get this clutch done so that it actually drives as it's supposed to.

Note a good Independent would charge half that for a standard clutch!! That £750.00 would be for an uprated clutch, otherwise one is clearly getting ripped off again!!  :fighting:

Yes if you talking main dealer prices then of course it will be more expensive.VAT is also an arse when you factor that in. As been said above, a recommended back street garage will have the tools to do this and you should be able to knock at least one third of my 1st estimate.Pound notes works in places it's worth asking the question ;-)

That's why i asked if you were close to Sheffield!? I know that Statlers would charge you LESS than half that, and would be inclusive of VAT, and fully invoiced, no cash in hand job..... :driver:

When JKM said my clutch was slipping (not that I've experienced it) I asked VW how much it would cost for a laugh. Came back after taking ages to work out a price and said it was ~£875, the clutch kit they said was ~£250 the rest was labour and VAT
