Ive snapped a few over the years.  Usually where the consoles have been removed before and no copper grease has been added when they have been re fitted.

I usually just drill them out and use Timeserts as the treads usually get damaged when removing the old bolt remains.

I had the same problem with mine last month, I knew from the first attempted turn of the bolt it was not looking good.
I ended up getting a replacement from a breakers, so at least knowing you can get one nearby for if/when it snaps would be good preperation should certain techniques not work.

Tried putting heat on it, molgrips, drilling it out, welding on a nut! Just cannot get the remaining stubs out.

New bolts went in with a bit of copperslip.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

It was this part my bolts snapped in ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/04-09-VW-GOLF-MK5-JETTA-N-S-WISHBONE-MOUNT-ALLOY-SUBFRAME-BRACKET-/181067579674?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D5152720590278089940%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D181067579674%26 )

It came off without dropping the subframe.

Although I have had the subframe off on my old mk5, just a lot of bolts and something like a strong pry bar to offer support.

So is it fairlystraight forward taking these 'side member' things off?

Aye, just a few bolts and maybe you have to drop the balljoint to get the wishbone free (mine was coming off anyway as bushes were shot)
