LED side lights
« on: January 27, 2013, 04:19:43 pm »
Anyone tried these?

 http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/501-error-free-5-smd-led-sidelights-bulbs-1/

They look as if they should be bright enough and with all round output.
I dont have DRLs so I'd like to use bright side lights instead of headlights in reasonable conditions.
Any other suggestions that don't cost the earth and last!?

Cheers

Hi OSB,
I have tried quite a few of these, and have found that the ones made by Cree seem to be quite bright.
I originally had these
http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/product.php?productid=17114

then changed to these, and could hardly notice any difference, changed one at a time to compare.
http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/501-Long-19-LED-Extreme-Power-2W.html

I recently got these.
http://www.lightec-autostyle.co.uk/high-power-cree-xenon-white-sidelight-bulbs-p-243.html
And noticed quite a difference. To be fair, part of the difference might have been that the light is all coming from one place, rather than sperate LED's.
You can get these in 7W ! but make sure they fit through the sidelight holes, as they get wider as the power increases, and much hotter.

Here is a good thread on the Honda Civic forum discussing these bulbs, I think you should be able to view the thread without logging on.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate that.
Will  check those links.
I didn't think too much about the size issue as I found the lights through following the Make / model etc links. But I will check.

I know that the more powerful LEDs do run some heat. Could that be more than standard bulbs? Could that be an issue?

OSB, I don't think heat should be an issue, I found it the other way, where the heat from the headlight bulb was burning out some of the LEDS on the multiple LED bulb, But I have not tried a high power one, which would give off more heat.

Paul, I don't think they are canbus bulbs, my car does not have that feature, so I cannot say, but I am fairly sure they are not.

It is possible to get them, here is a much more powerful version, but if you read the small print they are not Guaranteeing 100% canbus compatability.
I think this might be too bright for a sidelight.

gfrost - thanx for reply. i see what you mean, they label them as canbus free, then sit on the fence a bit.
