Should this be done on one of the bigger services ?

I don't think VW actually specify a mileage/time interval when it should be changed but I do it every two years.

According to VW it's a 'lifetime' filter and has no replacement schedule. Diesels are on a schedule, so VW must reckon our petrol is pretty clean nowadays.

I'm about to change mine at 50k miles anyway. Can't do any harm, unless you break a clip on a fuel line...you then need to replace the line.

I did mine at about 58000 just as a precaution

OK,thanks mate,My Stealers have been trying to rob me blind today and to say im not happy is an understatement.

Started off,with the middle service and Brake fluid service (total of £400:00) I then get the call to inform me that my rear brake calipers are dangerous and need to be changed at a cost inc fitting and VAT of £582:00,On the same call i also get told that my near side CV boot needs sorting at a cost of £240;00 inc fit and VAT.Not to mention a new fuel filter and surround for the car's airbox.

My car has been serviced by this Stelaer since i have owned it and it has wanted for nothing( I have the receipts to prove it).

So i inform the guy that im happy to pay the service costs but am not willing to let them carry out the work as ive managed to get a far better price from an independant VW speicalist and im going to give them the work as it worked out a saving of over £400:00 to get the MOT failure bits done.

So the guy says ok let me get back to you to see what we can do on the price,first they come down from 582:00 to 480:00 for the calipers to which no good as i can get them done via the specialist for 360:00 odd quid,so once again off goes the sales monkey to see what further reduction he can give me (this must of happened at least 5 times before i got them down to near on the same price as the Independant specialist.

So after all the faffing about VW have matched the specialist's price and have thrown in the fuel filter for good measure...

The car is in for the night with no courtesy car available...

I will be having an interesting conversation when i go in there tomorrow to pick up my car.

On my Cupra the fuel filter interval is 40k or 4 years according to the service book anyway.

What a rip off ! cv boot is only an hr labour. What can possibly be wrong with the calipers?

Just shows you a bit of haggling and pressure to go elsewhere gets you a big reduction.
£580 for rear calipers, ouch.   

Just bought a set of front calipers with pads for £80 that have done 10k from a MK6... Indy charged £70 to fit inc. brake fluid.

For £580 you could do NQS BBK!

LIke Rich I changed my fuel filter at about 60K but with previous cars I've changed them earlier. 
£10-12 is a small price for what I believe is a vital part of the fuel system; if a car manufacturer said the air or oil filter never needed changing I'd still be swapping it out at a reasonable mileage for peace of mind.  Some automatic gearboxes are sealed for life yet I know from experience they have serviceable filters. Perhaps car makers are keen to sell more units after they've been written off for 'gearbox issues'?  Cynical I know but built in obsolescence is not just a theory.....!!

The fuel in my old fuel filter was sooty black and perhaps it was doing its job efficiently but I'm happy in the knowledge its been replaced particularly as there were a number of news reports regarding cheap fuel at some of the less premium petrol establishments causing running issues.

According to VW the calipers are £300:00 quid on their own ? the rest was labour charges.....

The car had brand new disks and pads all round 2 yrs ago....It beggars belief really.

I also forgot to mention that the Airbox housing is also broken.They (VW) Want around 200:00 to do it.

Just to add,

I asked them to look into a new Diverter Valve,Price inc VAT and fitting......£247:00 although it could be more as the part no's i gave them have been superseded.
