I think you're misunderstanding?

Ask a high end car dealer how many people pay for their cars outright, they'll tell you only the mad and lottery winners.

If someone has accumulated £50k in savings, and want to blow that on a Porsche, then they're probably fairly savvy with money.

So, do you:

(i) Buy the car outright and blow £50k.
(ii) Invest the £50k at 10%, and finance the car at 5%

Most people do the latter, as that spare 5% is a big chunk of money to just throw away.

Both give you equal enjoyment of the car. I know people will rant and rave about "I own my car outright".... fair enough, that's absolutely fine.

....I totally agree that it may be far more sensible to buy the car on finance (which is why I bought my GTI outright and thank goodness I did because, long story short, I lost a 6-figure sum and am now living off State Benefits and so would have lost the car and my joy in driving her).

But I was responding, mostly to what QD posted, about what else you could buy for the same money and I don't see why that should dampen enthusiasm for what appears to be a great car, the 2013 Cayman S.

Depends if the 991 is a better car or not too :popcornsoda:

It is.

Lol, said with such conviction! How do you know? Have you seen the press-reaction to the Cayman, and conversely the 991?

I've driven both (4S and S, respectively).

Ha, well let me spell it out. The 2013 Cayman was launched to the press less than a week ago. I am in no way doubting that you've driven one but I am interested in how you came to, and more importantly how it compares to the 991. As yet I've not read any direct comparisons of the two. I get the impression that with the 991 Porsche have pushed the 911 further into GT territory, and the 2013 Cayman is stepping up to the plate as their proper sports car.

Don't feel obliged to answer in more than four words

If they make a cayman turbo with a 6 cylinder turbo engine I will probably have one.

If they make a cayman turbo with a 4 cylinder engine I will laugh. Who the hell would pay 65k+ for a 4 cylinder Porsche?? I hope the rumours are wrong

I'm not going to go into why I have driven those cars... Insofar as the comparison goes, the 991 feels more "grown-up" IMO - it's brilliantly good, and has lost all of the "slightly rubbish" feel of the 997 and previous generations. The Cayman, you're right, it is more like the "proper" sportscar, brilliant in its own right. But it doesn't have the surefootedness or the assurance of the 911 (I thought). I will admit I've had much less time in the Cayman than the 911.
Sorry for the brevity of my answers

They're all too good now, frankly. All cars were better when they were slightly rubbish in some fashion (I'm wondering if I'm getting old now).

Custard yellow works for me. I wish i had a need for or used a road car more than i do, as i would probably sell the kids and pets to get one.
