Few questions
« on: December 15, 2012, 07:03:26 pm »
Hi guys,

1st post! Had my 2005 GTI a few months now and loving it :driver: Here she is:

Car only has 48k and having covered a couple of thousand now I have a couple of questions I'm hoping you could help with.

A couple of times, (once at M40 services 100 miles into a journey and once after a short 15 min drive) I've come back to the car after 10 mins in the shops etc and turned the key for nothing to happen. Not even turning over. Seemed to fix itself by locking & unlocking the car a few times and waiting. Could this be an immobiliser issue? Battery?!

When the car is warm, and particularly when driving around London and it's poor roads, I get a rattle/knocking coming from the drivers side front wheel area, only noticeable at <10mph when accelerating/braking and MUCH louder when turning the wheel left to any extent. Had a VW indy look at it, they said everything was tight and as expected for the mileage. It's also only intermittent, and doesn't happen when the car is cold, but it's very annoying.

Finally.. the previous owner fitted a RNS510 and it has green backlit buttons as below (set up for Skoda?!), I don't mind that but would prefer VW red to fit in with the dash. Can this be changed via VCDS or similar?

Thanks!  :drinking:

hi, sounds like the immobiliser for the first problem, also wondering if it could be the battery in the key fob ?
do you have another key to test this maybe  :happy2:

Hi guys, been busy but looking into these problems whenever I get a chance

Replaced battery in fob and hasn't refused to start since, so that one is all sorted.

Regarding rattle from front suspension area, I've come across this post: http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=158162 anyone agree with it? Anyone else had to replace strut bearings & mounts? Not sure if I can get ECS ones here, or best just to go OEM.

And still none the wiser if I can change my RNS510 from Skoda green to VW red on the buttons.. anyone know?!

You can change the colour of the UI with vcds
Without traction power is nothing!

The buttons are lit by SMDs IIRC. Not easy to change.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Looks like you have the Skoda Colombus unit fitted. Only way to get red is to swap for a VW RNS. Or change the SMDs (LEDs) as said.
Sold - 2006 Tornado Red GTI 3dr

Just to let everyone know, I got to the bottom of the rattle/knocking when turning left - the drivers side top mount & bearing were replaced and that's sorted it!

The mkv thread below prompted this.

Best £50 or so ever spent!

Will have to put up with the Columbus unit for now then.. not too bothered by a bit of green!
