What fuel?
« on: February 08, 2013, 07:11:58 pm »
Okay, this has probably been discussed a million times, but searching I couldn't find anything...

I need to go fill up, but before I do, is it worth spending the extra 5p / litre on the premium fuel from Tesco, or the extra 8p / litre for BP or 9p / litre for Shell? This is based on my local Tesco's current standard fuel price. I have a MK5 GTi. I am more concerned about economy than 'go' in this case.

Thanks

If you want economy put the cheap stuff in, your car will be fine.  :happy2:

Oh, I know. I was just curious as to whether I would get better MPG from spending that little more. Short on cash this month after the purchase of the car so I can't really do the experiments with the fuel and was hoping someone who has could help out =]

I'd say the opposite, if you want economy use the higher octane stuff. My car has always run better and been more efficient oh 99ron fuel.

I'd agree on the high octane. Shell V-Power or Tesco Super. Definately get more MPG to make up for the extra price, probably just about evens it out. You also get cleaning additives etc in it for your money.

I just got my GTi ED30 too. I'm on my second tank, first tank got 380 miles with a few hard blasts in between. This tank i'm just about to finish and will get approx 410 miles, have a quick blast (nothing crazy) most days too. I think this is excellent economy for such a car like this.

that's more than im getting, prob averaging around 320 per tank, well until light comes on i should say,
is your figures until the tank is empty or until the fuel light comes on ?

as hedge says an extra £2.50 for a cleaner higher octane fuel that probably evens out your mpg anyway makes all the sense

yeah after about 100,000 miles you get a fiver
stupid useless card
always use the tesco clubcard, usually get about £30 or so off vouchers every 3 months ( that's shopping to though ) then convert them to 4 times their value if you choose a restaurant from their rewards catalogue, so £30 becomes £120, then treat the wife to a meal  :happy2:
only terms and conditions are that it doesnt cover drink, good deal

I noticed after putting V-Power in my car, I got better MPG and have done since. I thought it takes a tank-full or two to reap the benefits though? Or is that the performance benefits.
