Aftermarket Xenon Kits (and the dreaded Wiper Motor Fail!)
« on: February 09, 2013, 04:54:16 pm »
I'm getting excited about my Xenon-look headlights coming soon through the group buy on here. www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,61320 and am trying to figure out what sort of Xenon kit to fit.

First off, im not trying to buy cheap so that i break my car just don't want to spend more than i have to. Ill go OEM if i have to.

So after hours of googling and going insane  :stupid: i've read loads of scary stuff about aftermarket HID kits causing problems with the wiper motors and causing them to let go after 3-4months of use. Every discussion seems to point to these 'special' kits made by well-doneHIDs http://www.welldonehid.com/epages/eb3940.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/eb3940/Products/Xen_A38P_H7 designed for the A3. They're not exactly cheap and the discussions going around dont state what these kits have differently from any others on the market. Can anyone share some personal experience or advice on this?

1. Anyone had HID's fitted for over a year with no prob's?
2. Links please

TIA  :happy2:

Do you have to link it up on a relay?

Had my HID kit in for over a year, I got mine off eBay for about £40, just make sure you get a canbus error free kit and don't pay over £60 for a kit as they are all the same Chinese kits with different stickers on, the ones you have linked are a stupid amount to pay for a kit.

OP - what did you go for in the end?

I've been running the Depo projector units for a month now and am tempted by some aftermarket HIDs to increase the light output!

I will be fitting my Xenon-look headlights in the next week or two. Have been thinking about fitting a HID kit along with it.

So anybody got links or pics of the light beams?

Also what colour temp did you go for? I was thinking 4.3k or 5k.

Have bought from Hids Direct before so will take a look on there.

Do you want the real xenon's or xenon look headlights?

The GB is for xenon look headlights and yes is the cheapest place to get them :happy2:

Real used OEM xenon's will set you back about £500-600.

Do you have canbus error-free kit? I'm thinking 6000k is the one to go for?

This looks the best value one out there: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200784303489?var=500071534814&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Canbus error free is a lie, as there is no such thing. But for the sake of arguments let's just say there is.
I don't have any sort of error cancelling devices on my lights, as I tried it with them and it didn't work. They work fine without. 4300k are closest to OEM, and provide the best possible light on the road.

If you don't have projector headlights then stick with normal bulbs (aimed at people in general).

I have been looking at the kit from Hids Direct:

http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/h7-35w-ultra-canbus-hid-conversion-kits/

http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/h7-ultra-35w-slim-canbus-hid-xenon-conversion-kit/

What's the difference in these kits? Does the 2nd one have slimmer ballasts?

Looking to go for the 5000k kit.

4300k will be better for on-road light and look OEM.

The difference is that the "slim ballasts" are "slim" and the other ones are fatter, thus harder to place. I'd go with Slim ones, when I buy a new kit and re-do it, bumper will be coming off, headlights out, and ballasts will be mounted underneath the headlight for a completely discreet install.
I currently have a 4300k kit with slim ballasts, the install looks relatively tidy.
