stearing wheel fitment advice

had a new mk6 mfsw fitted recently into my mk5 gti
when the mechanic fitted it he told me it was very slightly squint, it is only by about half an inch maybe but it bothers me.
I asked him why and he said he put it onto the correct notch but adjusting my tracking would solve the problem, he assured me the wheel would not have to come off again to fix it.
My query is that at the time my car went in my tracking was 100% straight, easily tested by taking your hands off the wheel on a flat straight road and checking for drift, also my old steering wheel was bang on straight.
If i adjust my tracking to correct this problem am i actually doing the correct thing, im thinking here that the car IS straight just now and it is just the wheel that is squint, if we mess about changing the tracking to match the squint in the wheel am i effectivelly knocking the allignment / tracking ( OUT ) ???
After a bit of advice on this as im not sure if i should go back to them and get the tracking adjusted ( which im not sure they should be paying for instead of me )
or to ask them to sort the squint fitment of the steering wheel ???
does anyone know the actual size diff if the wheel is fitted and it is for example just one notch out ?
would it be as little as half an inch ?
Paid them £150 to fit this wheel as well and had to get eddie-nl to bail them out over the phone as they couldnt code it.
Fitting a mk6 mfsw to a mk5 seems to be a job NOBODY has the skill to do, even vw themselves.

I've fitted mine, again with a bit help from the Main Man (Eddie-NL) for the coding required.

In answering your question:- if it went in right and the wheel position was at 12oclock and the tracking was spot on then the new wheel should be as you expected - at 12 o'clock when driving straight ahead!

To explain how to correct it in text for you would start once upon a time, so to solve that if you PM me your number I'll call you and explain what they are saying and how you would be able to box in those bad guy's!

Just take the wheel off again and line up the marks, or move it along a few notches in the direction you need (park with wheels straight)
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

if i knew how to fit the wheel in the first place i would have done it myself but due to the amount of parts i didnt.
Remember fitting a mk6 wheel requires a new airbag as well as a new control module, this is why i used a garage, my query is should the wheel be refitted to make it straight or should the allignment be adjusted with the wheel locked at 12 o clock with clamps  :happy2:

You don't need any new parts, the wheel needs taken off and refitted properly
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.

at the beginning i needed the mk6 mfsw, a mk6 airbag and a mk6 control module, that is the parts i was referring to  :drinking:

I haven't misunderstood anything bud.

Doesn't matter if it's a mk4, mk5 or mk6 wheel, the solution to your issue is still the same.

Someone should remove the steering wheel and refit it on another spline to straighten it up, as you say it was sitting straight with the old wheel.

If the tracking is correct, you could fit the wheel at any position you want, but it would look and feel wrong!
So in answering your question the wheel can be out of alignment and the vehicles tracking can be correct.

What you need to know is "is your tracking correct"!

After that the repostioning of the wheel is very simple, but not if your not confident to do so!

However, you've paid good money for satisfaction and you're not happy is how I see it!

cheers guys, i will confirm the cars tracking is good then get the car back to the garage who done the work and ask them to straighten the wheel ( without ) touching my allignment.

the mk6 Airbag is a PITA to remove

when you can see more of one stalk then the other (1/4 - 3/4), when both stalks are in neutral posistions it is out by one notch

if the amount is minimal it won't fix the problem by moving it

then the issue could be tracking, camber of the road

Eddie, taking the car for a test drive on a flat road ( ie - no left dip etc ) and sitting perfectly straight before taking your hands off the wheel the car should remain straight, this is the way it has been since i bought the car.
If i do the same test and it is still straight then i am assuming my tracking is ok, tyres are all new with proper air pressure in them etc.
I know it's not a mechanical way of checking the tracking but in the past i have gone by this test and it has usually always been spot on.
I will check this on the car tomorrow, in your opinion and with the difficulty in getting the mk6 wheel straight would you say i should go back to the garage and get them to reposition the wheel ?
I am apprehensive about them touching the tracking if it is not showing signs of mis-allingment.
