Engine slow to heat or doesn't heat to 90 degrees

I've got a 54 plate GTi (standard 2 litre turbo engine) and for a while my engine doesn't always heat up to the ideal running temperature of 90 degrees. Even when it does, it's slow to get there, even on a hot day.

I had the thermostat changed a couple of years back and whilst it seemed to get to 90 a lot more often after that, the old problems seem to have returned.

The engine seems to run fine. It's only done 67k and is in very good running order, but I'm keen to know what this problem is and keen to know if it is doing any long term harm to my motor. Plus on these cold days, it's frustrating sitting in a chilly car. My fiancee's 1.4 Peugeot 206 heats up in no time!

I know basics about a car engine, but I'm not confident enough to mend things under the bonnet myself, just so you know my level.

First thing to check is if you actually have a thermostat in there. If there is, whip it out and throw in in some boiling water to check it's operation. The symptoms you mention are indicative of a thermostat that is stuck open.

Thanks. Is the Thermostat easy to remove? Like I say, I've got very little experience with car engines and I don't know where it lives. Thanks.

Also get yr radiator checked for leaking!? Bring it to an Independent VW specialis if you can!? Mine was doing the same, although had my broken smaller fan replaced as well! The thermostat would eventually get to 90, the go down a bit every so often, all fine now!
