Chassis notch?

Knowing a bit about welding, although the weld would be as strong if not better it still releases stress from the chassis from being cut, and on that knowledge alone Mr Ballentine im out!!lol agree with this quote ^

I had my 'notch' done at the garage that fitted my 'air' and could guarantee the workmanship to the highest level.

Did they guarantee that in the case of a head on collision that the chassis leg wont fold in half?

How do the MOT testers judge chassis notching?

I'm not anti chassis notching per se but am interested in bringing any negative safety aspects to anyone's notice who is considering doing it.

I've read a lot on notches.
I'm going for 2.5inch hole cutter and the metal to be welded in is 4mm thick tube.
There was a chap on edition who had a nasty head on in his car which had both sides notched and it didn't show up any extra problems from the damage. Now I know that doesn't make it ok as I guess crash tests would need to be done, but providing the metal is thicker than the original and both sides are welded correctly, I can only see it as being as strong if not stronger

Who would buy a car which has been notched?

Even if you knew all about notching (I didn't before I read threads here), how could you trust someone else's notching work?

Surely on inspecting a notched car a prospective buyer would shy away? I know I would.

strange how your all going on about a bit of metal cut out    how many people are driving around in crashed cars these days that don't even know its had major welding done to it  .I drove and many people do drive older cars that have had full resto work done on them but who knows how well the job has been done and if in a crash all the welds are going to hold up to an impact you just don't know its that simple. its a very small amount of work for added clearance and scene points

I think robin you would make a judgement at the time. For example if you trusted the garage the car had the work done, and it was done - lets say 2 years ago. The car is still working fine. A notch would make me think, not sure about shying away though

....Good point. I think you are probably right that if JKM (whom I trust a lot) advised me it was okay, then I wouldn't shy away. However, in reality I doubt very much indeed that I would be buying a car which was so low - My Mk5 GTI on KW coilovers is quite low enough!

And I can't imagine that an insurer would honour a claim on a car with a chassis notch. Just because loads of people do it doesn't make it a wise thing to do.

I think if you know who did the notch then I would buy the car, that said I think the only cars that I'd buy notched are those that are bagged..
