Grills!

Just wondering if it's possible or if any one has had all the front grills sprayed gloss black? Think it would look good but have no idea on cost or if it's even possible!

Not impossible no... however I wouldnt advise a rattle can job lol!

There is a white mk5 with lime green detailing i've seen it used as an ebay picture for open air grills if my memory serves correct... This has had the grills sprayed in white and green so would prove it to be possible.

A rattle can jobby can easily be done. If enough prep is done then the finish will be good. Depending on your skills with a can, you might feel your ready or not.

I could get a cheap / broken grill and try it if your unsure.... Then you can always say no, otherwise you can't go back

I have just done mine with a rattle can, just took my time with it and got it perfect.

 Just prepare it well, make sure there is a good key and it is nice and smooth with no imperfections in it, then use a good quality plastic primer, then normal primer and flat off any imperfections again. Then gloss black colour, flat again, then I put the laquer on in very thick coats and sprayed out any runs, then leave it to dry for a full week in a warm room, spare bedroom is ideal.

Then after a week, flat it down all over with some 1500 wet and dry ( what I used for all the flatting down) and rub out any imperfections again, go over with some g3 cutting compound (stronger and better than t-cut) then use your selected polish and rub in well. Finish off with your chosen wax and it should come up like glass!

I'll get a few pics of the one I've just finished off later when I get home. Looks as good as the original gt ones!

I'm am pretty sure Big Al with the silver 4 door GTI on air ride has his sprayed in gloss black.

  they look so good gloss black! Tbh I could probably do it myself but don't really have the time plus I'm sure the finish would be better from a pro how much do you lot reckon it would cost? Won't be doing this until weather is nicer but definitely looks way better!

Tbh, they shouldnt cost more than £100 for the lot, and realistically around £60-80 for a good job. Depends on the process, some may choose to plastic primer, or rough up the surface first then apply the gloss black. I would prefer the sang paper option.

Mine cost me £10 all together. Already had bits in the garage to do it, I don't have the time, not easy working 15 hour days! Just took my time and made sure everything was done properly. Think in all it took me 2 weeks to do it, just doing a bit at a time.

I quite enjoy doing things like this myself done the rear badge colour coded and that's spot on but the grills will take more effort I might find a local spray shop and see what they say. Thanks for the help looks like this is added to my ever growing list

I definitely want to get this done would make a big difference to the look, if anyone has done it or going to please post pics up of equipment used etc

Looks horrendous but you have to admire the effort and craftsmanship!

The gloss black looks the sex!
Oh and well done to those of you who have managed to rattle can it with good results wouldn't fancy it myself tho!
