I'm thinking of changing but what would I change to had car almost three year  I've never had a car that long     thing is shoul I just for the sake of changing its still a good car and  wife loves it  its only got 31k on the clock  what other cars same class as gti should I be looking at

The Trouble with Golfs is that they are doing everything well . They then becoming boring because they are good at everything , like the swotty kid at school who were all hated !
The real answer lies within your budget . I have a similar dilemma but have past experience of making the wrong decision when getting rid of my MK3 VR6 and regretted selling it . I cannot see any car under £20k that i would change my ED30 to , therefore the cost to me would be at least £8/9k so will not change .

That's exactly what the mechanic said yesterday after my service he said you would spend 10 grand more and get another gti so just keep it

That's sage advice. I've been looking at Mk6's (2009 models can be had for 13k), but I don't really see the point.
