LOL. No worries guys. Its still fairly on topic!  :signLOL:

I managed 45mpg out of a Mk2 Golf running an ABF 2.0 16v. It was a peach too, running really nice power.

Ive had nearly 600 miles out of 2 full tanks. With mostly short journeys, so im not having enough fun in the car compared to a few of you.

Any pics?

Ill have to host some. Converted it to a VR6 in the end, took me 3 weeks using my mates garage/ramps and tools. Errm, it didnt get 45mpg afterwards.  :signLOL:

Ive had 15x Mk2 Golfs though. Most modified with engine conversions in one way or another.

I can regularly get 40-41mpg if I want - on my way to work and back.
22 mile run, on a mix of M11/A406/A13

I always fill up my tank when it gets to the last quarter mark, and get around 320-330 miles to that point - with the computer still showing another 80-100 miles to go.
On a longer run, I reckon I could get 420-450 miles to a tank if I wanted.

In fact Im driving around 300 miles up North on Tuesday, then back later in the week. Wont be putting my foot down since I will have the wife and kids with me. Will see what I get and report back

I've got no chance of any of these figures...even if my car went back to stock.

Sheffield is basically built on seven steep hills and it completely buggers up the fuel economy

It is okay for all you Southern softies who live on the flat bits

My morning commute would regularly return 37 - 39mpg.

Now @ the Nurburgring, that was a different story  Nearly a quarter of a tank per lap!  :driver:

I often go up to the midlands to visit the 'rents. Almost always, I'll average 26mpg. Even if I try and restrict my heavy right foot, I barely get anything above 30mpg.

However, I once got around 42mpg (over a 150 mile journey) by using the cruise control. Even then, I reckon I could have got more if I didn't blip the throttle every now and then.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

In my MK3 16V the best I ever got was 42.8 MPG, the worst was 7, Although this was a much lighter car, still not bad for something 13 years old.
My MK5 gets about 31, managed 39 recently.

Does Cruise Control really make that much of a difference?!
Thinking of having it fit...

Yeah but I was doing 60mph. If you can keep the car at sixty without too much throttle adjustment, you're going to get high mpg. If, on the other hand, like me, you can't keep off the throttle, then you're gonna get low mpg. When I'm using cruise control, both feet are on the foot rests on either side of the pedals, so no temptation to floor it.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.
