Thinking of selling and getting a MK6 GTD

Hello... not been on here in a while... mainly as every time I come on, I leave with a new idea of something to spend money on lol

So been thinking for a while as looks like I'll be getting married pretty soon and at the mo I have the caddy van and the GTI and my GF has a clio but we will go down to 2 cars so I'd sell the GTi and Clio and get a GTD that she can use daily and then at the weekend we have a decent car to go about in.

Not driven a GTD yet... do they have GTI suspension etc and its just the TDI engine thats different?
Anyone else driven or indeed made the swap.

Ive seen them quoted as 60mpg but whats the real world figures?

No idea what mine would be worth for sale with all my upgraded bits but GTDs seem to start about £13k for early ones and £20k for 2012 models.

They don't have the same suspension as a GTI, but they are a decent drive. I had one for a few weeks while my car was in the garage and loved the blend of economy and performance it gave. If you're that way inclined they map well too.

how did the paint repair go by the way?
did they do a sport version of the MK6 gtd?
the MK5 gt tdi sport has upgraded suspension, larger wheels, lower profile tyres etc..
mine averages 55mpg commuting on A12 at 60mph, bit boring but the power is there when i want/can afford to have some fun. My mk4 was only 110bhp and 1.9 and returned nearer 70mpg.

Swapped my 06 GTI for a brand new GTD last March. The spec isn't identical to a GTI but is close. It's like a Mk2 Golf Driver vs a Mk2 GTI - nearly the same but those in the know can tell the difference. Engine is obviously less powerful but with the extra torque it leaves behind most other cars away from the lights! I used to get 38mpg in the GTI, the GTD has done an average of 56mpg after 12,000 miles.

Well worth a test drive to see if you like it. I certainly found it a very close comparison to my old GTI and I'm very glad of the 600 miles a tank rather than 400.

Thanks... yes that was in january while i was away skiing and they were re doing the front bumper after the lacquer peeled off... Its going back again soon though as the colour match was rubbish and the lacquer is now peeling off the lower splitter!! They will get it right eventually but its a bit of a pain.

Interesting. And how the hell did you get 38mpg from the gti. Mine is getting 25-28mpg to a tank (although is tuned a bit)

Engine aside does it handle similarly?

Yeah I mean its going to be used differently than my GTI so probably wouldnt mod it. GF would be using it to and from work and it would be doing much more town driving inc speed humps so wouldnt mind it being a bit softer... as long as when i then used it on the weekend it didnt feel like a regular TDI..... otherwise I may as well just get... well.. a TDI lol

Even on Motorways I struggle to get 28-30mpg but then im normally driving 80+ mph

Yes ideally it would stay... but moving to a place with no off street parking like I have at the moment, GF will have to start using it daily (plus she is younger so insurance is an issue). TBH id rather just get a more regular looking standard car than let the GTI get ruined.

Mileage likely to be 15k per year

I drive an Audi GTD Jedi   :happy2: (same engine at least, the GTD's vosprung cousin)

I'm impressed with it and it doesn't feel like a considerable drop from the GTI in power or drive. In the summer I can 600miles to a tank of pottering and 55mpg on cummutes. Drops to 500m/48mpg through cold months, mainly as it takes quite a while to reach peak temperature oil and water wise.

There's plenty of torque and grunt when you need it. The only thing I'd say with mine being the 6MT is get the DSG (or S-Tronic box in Audi's case) as unless you're very organised with the gears, can find yourself wanting more shove nipping out of junctions around town and stuff. But that's a minor criticism...

I've yet to map mine but after March when the Audi warranty runs out, it's happening. Initial aim will be 210hp as a roof target, then work from there with exhausts and the like.

I've got the same engine in my Scirocco and its great. Very responsive, torquey and can easily do 50+ mpg on a run. They are also very tuneable too  :evilgrin:

Not a bad sound out of them either - for a diesel. The DPF makes sure you don't get a hint of smoke out of the back and the tail pipes NEVER get sooty ,

I've activated the XDS on VAG COM - the GTD has it turned on from the factory, is recommend switching the setting up to 2 on VAG COM for the full effect. With the XDS it's incredibly capable out of the corners, I'm amazed how much grip it gives you  :happy2:

You can also activate needle sweep and loads of other options with VAG COM  :wink:

Like the OP i'm another member who hasn't been here recently but is also considering moving to a GTD. When my Ed30 was in for a service my local dealer lent me a reasonable spec 2012 GTD, the drive was lovely but the price was a little OTT (at £23k). Got 53mpg on the home > work run (Ed30 does about 32 on the same route). Somehow the price/spec ratio seems wrong with newer GTD's.

While they are lovely cars (my heart is really set on one) i've being lured by the cheaper but equivalent Audi A3 170 and BMW 320d M Sport.
