Cost of Cam belt change EEEEK!
« on: February 21, 2013, 08:30:10 am »
Just been quoted £637 for a cam belt change on my wife's MK6 2.0 TDI from the main stealer...
That sound really high - what do you recon out there?

I am getting a quote from my local indy garage.
Any sugestions for a reliable job in the guildford/woking area?

Thanks

(about to be poor OSB)

How much?

That seems absolutely insane to me...

My belt is due, I personally buy the kit myself as I have a friend who works in a motor factors therefore I get them cheap but none the less I recall only paying in excess of 200 for labour and that included the supply and fitment of a intercooler pipe, my local garage is cheap... but not 400 pound cheap lol!

I would suggest getting another quote mate, would also be good to find out how long the book time for a belt change is as it will give you an idea of what labour time you should be paying....

Well ..... have now had 3 quotes from local indy garages, ranging from £559 to £473 using genuine VW parts and including water pump.
Origional stealer quote did not include water pump - that would have taken it to over £750!!!!! WTF!

Slightly happier now......

£300 for my GTI at Statllers (sheffield).

Included genuine Belt kit & pump & Engine mount stretch bolts.

I imagine the TDI should be similar or the same.

My local dealer wanted 500 for cambelt and water pump done. I ended up getting the garage who sold me the car to do it for free after complaining.

That might be the main reason dealers get renamed to stealers! Just a brain fart after all. ;)

Ipswich Dealer emailed me yesterday:-

Cambelt and water pump on the Golf 2.0 TDI engine is £469.00 inc parts labour and VAT – without the water pump it is £389.00
Might try to get full antifreeze change throw in as well for that price!!

Sounds like you could be buying one of those gold cam belts!

That's insane, especially when you consider that I'm selling our mk3 8v gti with 90k on it for £995.  I know where I would spend my cash!!!

Main dealers are a con, I'm not sure how they can justify or get away with those kind of charges.

Good luck in finding a good local indie.

NOOOO!! The 389 SHOULD include the water pump aswell. It's crazy to charge that sort of price for both.
