Goodyear Asymmetric 2 XL
« on: February 22, 2013, 08:12:42 pm »
Now I have found out that the poor straight line steering on my Mk V Gti was caused by the soft sidewalls on my Asym 2s ( with Koni FSDs and standard springs), I am thinking of getting some XLs with the stiffer sidewalls.

Any advice out there guys? Anyone running on the XLs? Do they tighten up the steering without bringing the bone shaking back?

Thanks

I think the XL is the one you should have on the GTI??

Is it 92 or something?

Sorry I forgot to mention I am on 17" wheels and my only options are the 91Y or the 94XL

I wondered if anyone was running the 94XL or whether I needed to change to Pirelli or Michellin to get rid of the wandering all over the road caused by the soft sidewalls of the 91Y

Having read all the rave reviews I was expecting much more from the Asyms, so maybe it is the combination of the FSDs, standard springs and the soft walls on the 17" that does not work properly

Should always be XL tyres for the GTI, that is the correct spec.

Interesting stuff as I need new tyres too, and had pretty much decided on the 91Y F1 Asym 2's.

So is there any noticeable difference in ride quality then between the XL and non-XL tyres?

Also, tyre recommendations always seem to be for 'Y' rated (186mph / 290km/h) tyres, and never the 'W' rated (168mph / 270km/h) options. Is there any reason for that as I'm pretty sure most people won't be topping 168 anyway..... Ahem, or even half that... officer. :innocent:

Rich.

Yep Richie that is what is what I want to know (to XL or not to XL, that is the question) - if you go to the Goodyear web site or tirerack they state the car was designed for 91w not the XL.

Homesqueeze: I cannot find any reference to the Mk5 Gti DSG being on XL as correct spec with the 17" wheels, only 91W or 91Y - can you post a link please or tell me where to look?

I want a comfortable ride, and wonder if I can reduce the tyre pressures back into normal range with the XLs, but worry the change from 91 to 94 might counteract that - has anyone any experience of both types of tyre on the Asym 2?

Sorry, I was talking in reference to 18", so I don't know if it's different for 17"s. I don't have any documentation anyway, it's only what has been told to me and stated on this site several times.
