I changed my DV today, and am I glad I did... the boost is back!
I bought a standard GTI about a month ago which 'whistled' when accelerating, so I was pretty sure that the DV seal was shot. Measured on any scale, I'm no car mechanic, so thanks to Lee (nc35) for posting his write up a few years ago.
Here's the bones of it...
Fitting is quite easy. Remove OSF wheel and front of the wheel arch liner - the bit with the vent for the brakes (you will know it when you see it).
Once removed the DV is just behind the inner wing. The photograph in the first post will help you recognise the location. It is fastened on by three 5mm alan bolts. They are a little awkward to get to but not that bad. I have a Halfords Micro Pro socket set - about £30 if not in one of the 1/2 price sales. It is the best bit of kit I have ever bought, for just over a tenner and the instant replacement of broken bits for the pro range can't be beaten.
The kit has all the adapters in it to remove the wheel arch liner and the alan bolts.
Use a bit of thread lock before refitting.
All in all took about one hour from start to finish.
Hope this helps.
I don't own any ramps/axle stands so this 'going in through the wheel arch' guide was perfect - I did borrow a trolley jack though, rather than put my faith in the scissor jack.
The whole thing went pretty smoothly, but I'll just add a couple of extra things which may help someone else.
- If you open the bonnet, enough light will get through so you don't need a lamp. I did have a lamp, but once my hands were in there casting shadows, it didn't really add anything.
- There's about a million nooks and crannies under the DV so spread a cloth out under the DV and cover the whole lot and if (when!) you drop something it just lands on the cloth.
- There isn't a lot of space, so if you aren't familiar with how the clip for the DV wiring works, look at one in the engine bay first to see how they come apart. (There's one situated between the fusebox and the headlight).
- Like Lee, I used a 5mm allen key socket on a small ratchet (1/4") for the top bolt, but found it easier to do the lower two with a standard 5mm allen key. You can get one hand each side of the suspension strut which helps.
My car is a 55 plate with 99k on the clock (AXX engine, Rev. B DV), so I can only imagine how many times this rubber seal has been stretched. Here's a pic, 8 tears in total... Yikes!
I'm surprised that VW aren't recommending that these are checked at some point.
I replaced it with a Rev D. (part number 06H 145 710 D) <-- 31/03/13: I've now changed it again to a Rev G. (part number 06F 145 710 G) which is even better.
PS. I know there's a lot of DV stuff on the forum already, but for any other novices like me, you can never have enough info/tips.
Rich.
