Early and late mk5 gti engine differences

I would like to find out if the engine in the early mk5 gti 2004-05 is the same as the 2006-2008 gti. I have owned both early and late and i was told a few years ago the later 06-08 gtis engine is not the same...? Is this true

Early cars have AXX engine. Later ones BWA.

Hmmm...AFAIK MY2006 cars onward have the BWA.
