HELP! Key won't go in to ignition barrel!!!
« on: February 24, 2013, 10:57:15 am »
Hi Gang

Went to go out on the GTi yesterday, and I couldn't get the key into the blooming ignition barrel!  It won't go in at all.  Anyone else had this issue?

I did a quick google search and it sounds from what I've read that there is a spring loaded plastic guard thingy that can become logged and stop key entry.  Apparently, a bit of lube and a fiddle with a small driver should sort it.

Any comments/experiences/remedies for this before I go out and try and knacker my ignition with a screw driver?

Cheers

happened to me after stopping in asda once, never happened since, careful jiggling and jamming in with the key persuaded it to slide in eventually  :happy2:

Awesome - sorted now!

When looking in the hole I could see a white plastic section that was blocking the way.  It was evident that it moves from the steering wheel direction, to the bulk head direction.  Not really sure what purpose it serves, but it wouldn't budge and was stopping the key from entry.

A small electrical screw driver, and a bit of GT85 soon cured it as it pinged back into hits home.  Not sure if that ping was a "break" ping, or it just sitting home nicely ping! :scared: Still, I can now start the car! Yeah!
