Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

I am thinking of replacing my 8 year old ECT on my AXX MK5 Golf GTi. Takes a lot longer to warm up since I got the thermostat housing changed and am hoping this might be a quick fix!

Anyone got a part number for one of these? I just called my local stealership and they want £40 for a ECT, O-Ring and Clip. I have seen other people quote as little as £20 on threads?

Rich has just kindly sent me a link which shows part number: 06A919501A

The problem is the link shows a grey sensor, but apparently they come in black, green and blue. Could someone please confirm the colour of our sensors?

Purchased brand new July 2005. I think one of the first cars delivered in the UK to be a 2006 model spec, I.e with a roof aerial and changed interior.

Dont know if it makes any difference but wont that mean yr engine is a BWA?

Put the 06A919501A code in to google...

They come up for about 8-10 quid, 5 min fix... you just need someting to catch the coolant when it pours out the side on to your gear box...

The longest part would be taking your air intake of  :happy2:

hmmm, odd, anyway, when your needle does eventually get to 90, does it stay there or sometimes go down a bit, then back up again, and so on??

Usually gets to 90C in about 10 miles (previously when the car was new it would take about 2-3 miles) and sometimes comes down to 88C (i.e. not completely vertical!).

Thinking of ordering one anyway and changing it.

just when the same thing happened to mine, i discovered my radiator was leaking, and my smaller fan wasn't working, and between fixing the both, my needle goes to 90 and doesn't move!!In the cold weather we have been having, it can take as much as 20 minutes for it to reach 90!!  :confused:

I had my radiator changed three months back! I think that's when this problem appeared. Hmm!

remember of course it will take longer to warm up in these temperatures, especially if your heater is on above 20 degrees!  :surprised:

This is very true but having the car from brand new and driving it through 7 winters I know this warm up time is just not normal.

Funny that you should say that because I also had my radiator replaced, bout 6 mths ago, and, ironically a new coolant sensor as well, and ive often thought to myself it never took this long to heat up prior; I just put it down to the colder temperatures outside! Maybe a more efficient radiator keeps the engine from heating up to quickly, 'Ministry of the Bleeding Obvious'! :-P
