should the coolant temp gauge always stay at 90 degrees c on the mk5 platform the same as mk4 platform cars?

Yes, once it does reach 90, and the duration seems an issue for some, it should stay there! If it then goes down, or up for that matter, usually a sign of radiator problems!

It could, but for the sake of £7 its easier and faster to just change the ECT!

Just tried changing the sensor. Everything seemed to be going fine but I cannot put the new clip back in!! Seriously struggling with that. Already broken one! Any advice from anyone?

push it in from the bottom up, with the bottom of the clip more to the back of the car.

if in doubt, take the sensor back out, see what way it fits the clip, and put it back the way it worked, when of the car ...

Tried that. Even replaced the new sensor with the old one just in case! Still the clip does not want to go in between the plastic slot around the ECT sensor. I am really struggling. Already managed to break one clip so just one left. Can't believe siting one plastic clip can be this hard!

I am presuming if I dare start the car without the clip the sensor will come flying out!

Stick your finger in the hole to feel, make sure there is hair no O ring already in there.

Fit the O ring to the sensor, then pop it in place.

but when you look at mikes picture see the way his electric connector, connects, make sure ur's is sitting and fitting the same...

Thanks for all the help guys! Finally figured it out!

Basically I was being super stupid and trying to stuff the clip within the little slot in the black plastic holder. That was clearly never going to work, but somehow in my mind thats how it was before! Anyway when I figured out the clip just slides over the slot and not into it, everything clipped into place within a second (used the old clip as I had already broken the new one lol!).

Started the car, both rad fans went crazy 100%. Used VCDS threw up an error of Engine Coolant Temp Sensor, reset it and all seems well. Will drive it around tomorrow and see if my slow warm up issues have been adressed!

Glad you got it sorted...  how bad was your old sensor, take some pictures and throw them up for us guys to see how bad or not it was?

Sometimes we things need to be changed... wear and tear!

Its the original 2005 sensor from when the car was brand new.

Just went out for a 'drive' - fantastic, temp gauge started moving at 2 miles into city driving and within 5 miles was up to 90C. Just like old times!
