i dont know if it differs to which gearbox you have (most likely will) but i have a 5 speed manual on a 1.9TDi and it is about 5 inches above the drain plug and has the same style, easiest way to describe it, is that it looks like the head of a bolt will fit in there

hope this helps

again, i think it differs on each box...buuuut when i had it done on my 6 speed, the VW manual stated it had to be refilled via the reverse sensor hole (So had to remove the reverse sensor and refill via a hose and funnel)

reason for that was that the fill level is halfway up the inspection hole

I thought the gearbox oil was a 'lifetime' item and never needs to be changed.

Why did/are you guys changing it?

vw say 'lifetime' which in actual fact means about 150,000 miles or thereabouts... if you think the gearbox's gears go up and down in temperature, the oil in there takes quite a bashing, for the cost of the oil and the time it takes its just a bit of preventative maintenance to swap out the old oil for nice new vw oem oil. plus it can make the gear changes a bit smoother
