Brake Disc Hub Rust (Looking to paint)
« on: March 11, 2013, 01:33:15 pm »
Hey guys/gals

I got my NQSBBK fitted a couple of weeks (and absolutely love it ) but the brake disc hubs have started to rust (I have now read it is common). So I plan to paint them during the bank holiday later this month, so I wanted to find out what paint is best to get.

I'm thinking of going for silver or black.

What paint would you guys/gals recommend?

Thanks
Kalpesh

Sand back, rust remedy, etch primer, then high temp paint... I've always done silver, but black looks good...

Painted mine with Black Hammerite 'Direct to Rust' stuff from Halfords, did the same with my previous 2 cars where the same thing had happened!

Did all mine before having them fitted the other day. No pics of the rears but they look like the fronts. I used Zinc 182 Anti rust primer followed by Halfords Black High Temperature Paint. I masked everything off but i was told this is not really needed as the pads will remove any excess paint/spray. 2 coats of each (both sides) and the edges.

D'oh! Should have done that before fitting (you live and learn). I think I will have to do it with them fitted to the car now, so probably best to go for brush on rather than spray I'm guessing.

Martin do you have any pics of them fitted to the car? I was leaning towards silver but may go for black depending on the look.

No worries. Yeah we have had some here in London but not settling.

Anyone else got any pics showing black brake disc hubs?

Here you go! I did mine last year using Halfords high temperature satin black paint. Brushed it on whilst hubs were on the car. Easy enough to do and looks good.

I have to get this done too. The laziest option seems to be - brush off loose rust then a lick of Hammerite 'direct to rust'.

If I make a bags of it it's no big deal as I'll have to replace the discs soon enough anyway.

That's what I am currently planning to do

Am looking to go silver so would this be ok?

Is there any heat tolerance in that paint?  I know this isn't going to generate as much heat as the disc/pad surface, but I'd bet it gets pretty hot at times; last thing you want is that dripping on to your wheels... or disc/pad! :surprised:  I like the idea of matching the disc colour though.

It's not specifically a high temperature paint. However some forum people have used it without issue.

Actually I was thinking of using it on my calipers, but not sure if they get hot or not??

Probably a good couple of hundred degrees C for the calipers (don't quote me) - I'd only use high temp. paint on those personally - there's lots of caliper paints in halfords.  Thinking about, I'd probably use some caliper paint on the bells too.

Can I ask what colour are your wheels, smoked chrome or anthracite?
