Power tools!! Mitre Saws.........
« on: March 11, 2013, 09:44:48 pm »
Hi All

Finally looking at getting a mitre saw. However, I cannot immediately see why the sliding versions cost so much more! Only a keen DIY'er, but want to get some compact and still able to cope with larger tasks.

Would really be grateful for any views on these:

http://www.toolstop.co.uk/bosch-pcm-7s-1200w-diy-sliding-mitre-saw-240v-p59290

http://www.toolstop.co.uk/bosch-pcm-8-s-1200w-diy-bench-top-compound-sliding-mitre-saw-240v-p7072

http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dw713xps-250mm-mitre-saw-240v/69195

These are max budget. It just seems that the Dewalt can cope with similar thickness with sliding??

Thanks in advance, cheers

it will depend on what you are going to use it for

A sliding one can be used to trench

I've always used Dewalt and they have been good for their saws

Hire and save yourself the worry if it's not for anything other than DIY,as there's no single perfect tool - Dewalt is the most trouble free product we've bought for everyday use for the price though!

Ah trench.......? Initially just for skirtings, batons etc, but will need to cope with joists when I start putting storage up in the roof pitch of the garage! So sliding version might not be necessary?

Thanks v much

Thanks, never thought about hiring, but will be a birthday present, and just handy to have to hand when I am doing odd timber jobs.

Out of those listed it would have to be the DeWalt, Bosch power tools don't last. You should be looking at DeWalt, Makita or Hitachi.  :happy2:

My De Walt has been extremely solid.  Bosch one was not.
If you have lots of work for it, I would say the higher price for the De Walt is a good investment.

Thanks Guys

My only concern with the Dewalt is that it is non-sliding, and the Bosch do slide. Just worried that once I start using it more, I might realise the benefit of the slide function....??? Still not sure what the slide does yet!!??

Thanks all

I got one from b&q lasted year and its fine for 99 quid. Think it's made by a company called rage.

With the slide you can cut wider items such as flooring.

The slide allows you to cut wider boards for a given blade size. As you can see in the links you've provided the 2 Bosch saws have smaller blades than the DeWalt. For the home DIY'er an Evolution Rage sliding saw (as mentioned by RICHWIG83) is a better buy than a Bosch and will last better.

Rage 3-S Evolution  are worth their weight in gold. £99 Screwfix.

The Thin Multi purpose Blades are Amazing, and they are only £20 to replace, but they last ages.
(Dependant on how much Metal you cut through)

I have a £700 Bosch 305mm Mitre Saw that I used for work, but I bought the Rage for smaller jobs.

Since I've had the Rage saw, I've only ever used the Bosch for things like 4x4" decking posts etc. The Rage is So handy and portable.

The Rage is awesome for Skirting and Door Archi's etc. Even with its little Blade it will cut 200mm on a 45'.

You will struggle with wet joists if they are over 6x2" but tbh the Rage 3-S isn't really the tool for that sort of work.

If you get the Rage 3-S you WILL love it.

For £200 you can get the Bigger Rage 3.

Tbh I think this is the one for you mate.

It'll do almost anything...including the bigger stuff.

Thanks all. Monte, really like the look of your suggestions, but there seems to be 2 versions of the 3S at Screwfix. Seem the same power etc, perhaps a new model. This one seems to have guides and a dust bag, but £169! ????

I can get the Dewalt in my original post for £130, but the Evolution seems to be the one to go for still? Plus I've always wanted an Evo!

As said by others, those Bosch ones are very cheaply made. Being green they are diy use (flimsy), for decent Bosch you need the professional range which are blue.
