Do you think these are MK6 calipers?

Grabbed some MK6 calipers from eBay recently as my rears have been in desperate need of a swap. (bind on everynight)

I'm not so sure these are MK6 calipers, as I was under the impression they were lighter, as you can see from the image below, these are MUCH heavier, and also the spring attachment is different... if I offer up the other caliper then the brake fluid hole is at the top:



They were advertsied as MK6 rear calipers, to fit MK5, amongst others...

What do you guys think?

Just looked on Genuine VW parts, and you can see (abelit the caliper is the other way around) that the shape of the face is the same as the MK5 caliper above... not square.

What part number is the one you got as someone with ekta could check it out for you.

Surely the Mk6 rear caliper can't be 750 grams more than the Mk5!  That's a lot more unsprung weight, with no discernable advantage in stopping power

Anyone with EKTA that could take a quick look at the part number above?  See if that really is a MK6 caliper

Bullocks, looks like they are MK6 calipers from 2010 onwards; VW in all their wisdom decided to not only make the rear caliper a sh!t load heavier but also give it a smaller rear disc in both diameter and depth:

Mk.V GTI and early Mk.VI GTI: TRW calipers + 286 x 12 mm disc, 1695 grams
Late Mk.VI GTI (from 2010 on): Bosch calipers + 272 x 10 mm disc, 2440 grams

The Bosch calipers have a straight edge carrier, TRW carriers have a curved profile.
The end hoses are different, so you will definitely need the Bosch hoses to fit... and will the Bosch caliper accept a 286 x 12mm disc??

1. Send them back and grab some lighter MK5 rears?
2. Just whack 'em on, it won't make much difference on the rear.

Sorry cant find the photo I had of the brake line you need and don't know the part No but the pair were only about £8 from VW. They work absolutely fine with the standard Mk5 discs and pads and there's no isued fitting the handbrake either.

Thanks mate... it's just the weight putting me off now; I've got the lines, so that's not a prob.
Just put the MK5's back on (after unceasing a piston) until I decide, lol.

Did you notice any difference in the setup?

Actually mate, your carriers are different, mine have a straight edge and not the kidney shape of yours (yours are like the mk5), the caliper is the same as mine though weird this, lol.

The weight thing will be minimal you'll never notice, it's not even a kilo, they did however improve my braking loads.

I read somewhere that even a kilo of unsprung mass is like 5kg of sprung mass... per corner!  Whether I'm that concerned for the rears, meh, it might sit its ass down more in the corners, lol... I was just a bit put out that they were heavier at all, when I read they were going to be lighter.

By the looks of it your using MK5 carriers (or early MK6) and late (Bosch 2010+) MK6 calipers; it's funny how VW mash these things together... in some respects it will save me having to remove the old carriers (spline bolts) if they bolt straight on.

The old thing was so ceased up, took me ages to get things moving with good old PlusGas.

If you  are worried about the weight put a bit less fuel in. I bet you cant tell the difference between a full tank of gas and a nearly empty one!

I know I'm sad, but I've always been able to tell from full tank to empty, same as when I've got a passenger or being on my own; everything feels just a bit more 'spongy'.

Petrol weight 1 Litre = 0.711kg (at 60 deg F)

12.1 gallon (55L) full tank... 0.711 * 55 = 39 KG
6.05 gallon (27.5L) half tank... 0.711 * 27.5 = 19.5 KG
3.025 gallon (13.75) quarter tank... 0.711 * 13.75 = 9.7765 KG

The Mk6 calipers add about 10KG to sprung mass on the rear axle over the Mk5, so about the equivalent to an extra quarter tank of fuel; for no advantage, they are the same piston size and pressure.
