What is diversity?

So i have a 2008 golf with roof aerial & 2 aerial leads going to head unit. Me mk4 only had 1 lead. The rcd510 manual mentions 2 leads for diversity, but it does'nt say what diversity is or does??
Would i have any other audio kit in the car?, iv'e read that some models have an amp under the seat, others have an amp in the boot for windscreen aerials.
Could someone explain all please.

Diversity is the system used to get the best radio reception to your stereo. Your radio signal may come from your roof aerial or the aerial on the rear windscreen.

The rear windscreen signal will be amplified. I think the old gti had a signal amplifier separate to the radio but I think the newer gti (like mine on 07 plate) has the signal amplifier incorporated in the stereo itself.
