Past 80k miles now? There are going to be many more in the near future if they don't get to checking those cam followers often after 75k miles. Most c/f's are gone at or about 100k miles +/- 20k miles. We (in the US) had a warranty extension for the ones with the earlier version A-cam, but we are seeing increasingly more and more c/f break downs as well. It's too bad they didn't include this in a known service interval as it is going to be surprising tens-of-thousands here very soon. It really sucks...too bad ;(

So now you need a rail hpfp, c/f, and intake cam...dammit...and a good sump clean out.

Hi, Yeah it's on 86000. Ive Only had the car since November last year & Took the car for a cambelt & water pump change yesterday & this is what the garage found. I've read lots of posts about this happening & apparently there are signs, but being a novice I didn't really have any idea apart from the diesel like noise (which I was told is quite normal) & a sudden loss of power intermittently but thought that could've been down to a boost leak. Only sold my mk2 a week ago so the funds for that are now going on a repair

Dude, you are not going to be alone in this. VW had better get to making loads and loads of pumps, followers, and intake cams. Because they are about to be hit with another "known to be unreliable" era. Too bad too. I think they have sold over 300k GTI's.

I'm new to golf Gti's. only owned mine for 2 weeks. I've read up about diverter valves etc. what's this cam follower fault??

My car has done 65k miles. Is it something that needs changed before it breaks properly?? How much to sort it??

Cheers

Neil

It's a £20 part and 30 minutes labour. Pretty simple to do yourself if you're reasonably competent around an engine.

Going by that picture you have an early 'A' camshaft.  Would have happened one way or another.

I have some diy vids. The cam follower is a part inside, or between the intake cam's fuel lobe and the hpfp(high pressure fuel pump) that gets fully compressed 3 times per revolution...only here in the US the warranty was extended to 120k miles or 10 years for pre mid '07 GTI's with an A-version intake cam because they were failing sometimes before 40k miles. Everywhere and everyone else is going to need to check their cam followers. There is no notice in the service schedule and your VW-tech is not going to mention it to you during a scheduled service at any time. Commonly, most cam followers are failing between 80k and 120k miles. This destroys, not only the inexpensive cam follower but, the hpfp and intake cam. Repairs will cost upwards of 1200gbp. Some here are paying from $2200 to $2600usd for this repair. If you have the banjo bolt on the high pressure side, under and left on the hpfp, you may look into converting it to a barb-outlet. My video only shows a barb fitting:

I have a diesel type noise and occasional loss of power/juddering. Is this an issue? It's on 102k. How do I check this 'cam follower'?

I have a link to my diy vid about two posts up... ;p

If any part of the black DLC(diamond like coating) is missing...put in a new cam follower and recheck when you near this present mileage times two.

Very worrying as my miles are creeping up but no issues with my ED30 yet.

I have always extended my VW warranty, would this be covered under that should this happen?

I watched the video, it looks easy enough to do, but I don't want to go messing around with my fuel pump. I'm no mechanic. Could this be causing the diesel type noise? I dunno. I'm actually worried about this...
