That's the one !
Just picked a follower up today for £28.39 from my local dealers, changing it at the weekend on my '55 plate with 94k miles. Fingers crossed it's all ok, there's no evidence of it being changed before.........

If I am going ahead and replacing it, where can I get some engine lubrication from?

Out of a can of oil?

Coat the c/f with any lube...yes, like oil...I just prefer to use assy. lube, but not required.

Will do, the car had a bit of a wobbler the other day though, after a long run it started to rattle on idle and was missing heavily and I was over in the Lakes at the time !
300 miles later it's never faltered so who knows....

BTW...posted this on the official VW website's contact and comments:

We, your loyal customers, are getting fed up with the rail pump cam follower failings. Why there was not a revision to the scheduled services is beyond me. Why none of the service representatives are advising the need for this service...again, beyond me. How certified used vehicles are leaving lots only for this part to fail without any sort of warranty...beyond me again. How you expect customer loyalty with all of this hurting everyone of your 2.0t FSI owners...so far beyond me. Why I am having to warn everyone I can on as many forums as I can...ridiculous. If they only had known a $50usd part could've saved them thousands of dollars..priceless. Do something about this...stand up for what is wrongly put upon us.

Feel free to join in with your own thoughts:

VW's response to my email:

Volkswagen stands behind our products through both our original warranty, and additional campaigns such as extended warranties, service actions, and recalls.
I apologize for any concerns you have run into related to the cam follower in your vehicle.
Many vehicles were given an extended warranty for issues relating to the intake camshaft, camshaft follower, and high pressure fuel pump. If you provide me more information about your vehicle, such as the model, model year, and VIN, I would be happy to determine if this extended warranty has affected your vehicle.

My reply to their's:

Dear Mr. A., Tim
I received this letter after my cam follower had already failed years ago. And, I believe you when you say "Volkswagen stands behind our products through both our original warranty, and additional campaigns such as extended warranties, service actions, and recalls" in response to my original suggestion. I know that VW does...the issue isn't that you don't stand behind all of what has been said, but that there is still an issue with this being an ongoing failure for many that do have the B-version, or other version not being an A-version, intake cam.

The issue is:
The cam follower in the hpfp is wearing out for many with mileages of 80k to 120k miles. I've been on nearly a dozen forums for six years and recently there are many new and original owners having to deal with the inconvenience of replacing their rail pump(hpfp) and intake cam due to a $50usd part not included in your service intervals and not being mentioned by service representatives. People have left from having it serviced only to find themselves back within days or weeks due to a failed cam follower that VW is handling like a "US Government cover-up", so to speak.
As I said in my first message, I wrote something like "why this is not included in the service interval, or at least by now, why hasn't there been an amendment to the service intervals sent out to all known owners" and "why service rep's aren't advising this" as well is beyond me. You all have seemed to believe in the determination that there is no problem with the cam follower now that you all have publicly notified the world of a poor A-version cam. The hundreds of thousands of forum visitors are reading my messages to you and agree that VW is going to ignore this and shame on them if they do. When I wrote "stand behind this" in my first message to VW, I meant at least have service rep's have to mention it at certain mileages and try to send out an addition of this service to the known owners. But, as you too have done by ignoring my suggestions in your own response, I can assume VW will continue to ignore the issue as well, right?
Sincerely concerned,
