New MOT rules
« on: March 20, 2013, 06:24:23 pm »
Guys and girls,

As you may or may not know a few new rules came in today for the MOT test.

Just want to make sure the R32 xenons I'm about to fit will still pass?

I'm not doing auto levelling or washers.

I'm sure I've been told that retrofits don't apply it's just if the xenons were standard.

Anyone got a link to new criteria to confirm?

We talked in great detail about last years rule regarding Xenons and levellers. General consensus was that the tester should assume they were there IIRC.

Think we could do with a link to the rules if you could provide one?

Does the new link cover the new stuff from today?? It's a real nightmare! I'm trying to get my head around what VOSA want now!

Last I checked, if xenons are fitted, IF autolevelling and washers are fitted then they must be working. So implies, if they are not there, they dont need to be working or need to be retrofitted.

Passed my MOT late summer last year no problems. They will only check they are correctly aimed and adjust if required and my MOTs are done at the VW dealers.

My mint R32 xenons will be up for grabs this easter if anyones itching for them  :happy2: keep your eyes peeled!

Having xenons retro fitted is fine and not having washers nor levellers is NOT an Mot failure.

What I would recommend is to change your halogen lamp adjustment switch on the dash for a xenon type switch, as the switch could be seen as inoperative and deemed faulty, as the roller on it doesn't do anything once you change to xenons.

From what I've read, you only need to be concerned if you've fitted hid bulbs in Halogen housings as the beam from them isn't the correct beam that was designed with these lenses ,and this could blind oncoming traffic..!!  :fighting:

Was going to happen last year but got delayed to this year. If you scroll down all the changes are listed.

I thought this was correct regarding retro fitting just wanted to make sure before I went ahead.

As long as the xenons are aligned properly I can't see a problem?

Saintsteve you know where I can get xenon switch from? Dealer only?

I think the main issue with xenons is the usage of HID kits with them. Obviously some xenon headlights use halogen lights with out washers etc. Once you put HID kits in or have HID xenons you should have washers. Self levelling should be standard with them.

So, in theory should only be an issue if you have HIDs in that aren't specifically designed for it.

I think the main emphasis is to try and weed out illegal HID usage.........could be wrong...

I seem to remember that last years manual on lighting was that levellers and washers may be fitted.

Nothing in that to say compulsory  :happy2:

Can only see this year being stricter

Yes dealer only. Switch is cheap , as i done mine. Just ask them to search on a xenon fitted setup to find correct switch.

No coding required.

Yeh I just done some more research. Just put some halogens in for the MOT if you have HIDs and don't comply. As you say, just a re-emphasis on the already in place rules.

However, I note that headlight tints could be a reason for failue now! Refers to ""obviously reduce the light's intensity or change its colour will become a reason for failure"". Hmmmmm. My yellow fogs are fine but may hold off on the subtle tint now!

So HIDs are the problem basically, R32 xenons aren't HID then?

Your just referring to the cheap eBay kits?

Well that's what I read into it! I've no idea whether the r32 lights are halogen or his but the difference between them is obvious if you check it out.

Thin I the rules have tried to stop the cheap eBay kits but some are proper expensive but equally at fault!

That's what I read anyway - may well be wrong. If the light units have hids inherently built in you should have washers etc but if its just halogens you don't, but you could put a aftermarket kit in of course. Hopefully that makes sense?

I know the R32 lights aren't halogen they are xenon, just weren't sure if they were HID.

Not very clear what they want is it!

Sorry wasn't 100% clear. I know the lights aren't standard halogen like, but the bulbs used in the xenons may well be halogen bulbs. As said the different between hids and halogens are quite easy to spot.
