Virgin Media Superhub

The plums at VM installed this Superhub recently, completely disconnecting my configured and fully secure Belkin Wifi home router without informing me.

I've changed the config to route the net around properly now with sufficient security, but the VM Superhub seems to take about 5 minutes to acquire a stable internet connection. The engineer guessed explained that this was because the Superhub takes some time to establish it's internet connection which is part of it's 'design' and function. I guess that means in real terms it's pretty slow to establish a DNS address in the outside world?

The Superhub also appears unbranded, with little device labeling and no manual/documentation that came with it so all in all, I'm guessing it's a sh*t bit of kit that they're happy to give away for free.

Is there an upgrade that VM offers or an aftermarket alternative I can use to feed the connection in from the VM central hub in the front room wall?

It's a Netgear router just with some makeup.

In theory you could replace it provided you get something with a built in DSL modem and f-type connector.

My advice would be to just use the Superhub for the minimum and connect your router to one of its ethernet ports.

Yeah, the Superhub provides the net source to my Belkin kit Ian  :happy2:

I want to avoid the delay as it seems pointless. I've never known a router so sluggish  :chicken:

I'm pretty sure that sadly it will be built down to a price.

In the older days they would give you a separate modem but with the Superhub they have integrated it.  :sad1:

However, VM always come out of customer service satisfaction surveys smelling of roses of course...  :sick: :sick: :fighting: :fighting: :fighting:

the superhub is a complete pile of pants...

as explained by the few 'technicians' i've had out to me in the past, the reason VM customers are stuck with their modems is due partly to the DOCSIS 3.0 decoding and the fact that the cable is designed to give a DNS to only your MAC addressed modem - granted you could probably get a device to spoof this MAC address but gets all complicated...

it WILL take a few minutes, nowhere near 5, closer to 1-2 at longest to establish a connection.

i personally only use the superhub in 'modem only' mode and have it connected up to my asus RT-N66U modem giving me some pretty decent range on a dual band network through my home... this is an option too if you want to share USB devices, use a DNS routing service like openDNS/DynDNS for web filtering (think parental control at a router level here) and loads of other cool features like downloading using the router!

I'm a service technician for VM and the super hub is sh*t! :signLOL:

We have a new super hub launching this year some time which is miles better. The new one will do both 2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi at the same time aswell.

As stated above just log into the superhub and put it in modem mode then just connect your existing router to the ethernet port nearest the f-con

Superhub stops you changing the DNS addresses so can't use Netflix USA :(
