I'm facing the same question. My car is now 7-years-old with a touch over 50k miles on it. I've owned it for 6 years and it has full VW service history. The only thing stopping me taking to an Independent is the convenience of VW offering me a courtesy car and also the fact that they are also pretty competitively priced.
Most specialist offer a pick up and drop off service.
You got to ask yourself when it comes to sell your car the average bod in the street will probably me more concerned with a comprehensive full VW dealer history. Makes the car more sellable and you are in a much stronger position to command a higher price as a result.
An enthusiast will probably not be concerned as long as long as it has been maintained to a high standard.
You have a very good point there. However I do wonder if the best compromise would be to get just the basic service done whilst I wait. Then get all over work done at an indie. Another point to consider I feel is that the money you may be able to command on the fully serviced VW car will be offset by the money youve spent at a main dealer.
I must say once the cars ten years old I don't know that the dealers will be competent with older cars the way perhaps a good specalist may be. I'm by no means saying theres a right or wrong way just trying to have a good open conversation.
