What does this thing do (picture attached) ?
« on: March 31, 2013, 02:30:30 pm »
Afternoon All - hope chocolate consumption is going OK

Picked up my '56 GTi up on Thursday and I absolutely love her  :jumping: She's going back in next week to have the Kufatec hands free and music streaming kit fitted as well as cruise control. I need some guidance on this piece of kit please:

I gather it's the factory fit phone holder which I'd like to use moving forward. It looks like it'll charge a phone because I pulled the cover off and you can see wires running into the back of it. I guess it needs some kind of adapter - I've got an iPhone 4 - so can you get these from the main dealer?

The car has also got a CD multi-changer fitted in the armrest (not sure what to do with this as all my music's on the iPhone) but there's also a DVD player in the glovebox. The car's got the MFD2 fitted but no rear screens in the headrest so I'm not sure why it's been fitted - the head unit can play DVDs in any case. Any ideas?

I want to get DAB radio installed and wondered if anybody had views on the Kufatec module for that?

TIA

Cheers
Kav

I've no experience of this type of mobile phone system, but it looks like what you have is one of these:

You'll need a phone holder specifically for your model of phone in order to use this. I'd have a suspicion that mobile phone technology has moved on so much that you might not be able to use this with an iPhone 4, but somebody on here will correct me if I'm wrong. Again guessing, but the VW web page suggests this system might have Bluetooth but if you're having the kufatec system installed then that will be of no benefit anyway.

Unlike the later RNS510, the previous generation sat nav systems hold the map data on a CD/DVD (depending how old). To play a DVD movie would mean taking the navigation disk out every time. This might be why an external DVD has been fitted.

Done a bit more research on this and the piece of kit is called a Handy Adapter. I've sourced an iPhone 4 one from Germany for around 100 quid. Looking at the spiel, it seems that it'll do everything the Kufatec kit will (hands free and A2DP) plus it'll charge the phone for 50 quid less. It would appear to be a no-brainer.
