are mk5 gti`s to much hassel?

hi im currently looking to buy a 56 plate mk5 gti but after reading some posts its kind of put me off with all the problems there seems to be with these cars
are they really that bad? or am i reading to much into stuff eg rust etc?
also ive found a 56 reg with 95k miles on for £5700 fsh its manual pretty standard except heated seats and rear parking sensors, is that a good price?

any advice will be apriciated

Mine has been great since I bought it a year ago. She's 6 years old now.

Inevitably people post problems on a forum to try and find a solution, so it can appear that they're nothing but trouble.

Price seems ok if the car is in good shape.

its just putting me off reading about cam followers, dv, pcv, rust etc i was just hoping to buy the car and enjoy but it looks like if i do buy one the old toolbox is going to have to come out of retirement  :surprised: which i cant really be arsed to do if im honest, and  by time i replace all these parts the car int so cheap anymore.
oh well decisions decisions

Go on ANY forum and you will find these stories.

Forums are mostly used to help diagnose common problems.

End of the day if you dont want to see these bad points of ANY car...

DV, PCV, Cam follower are all cheap fixes  :happy2:

As has been said many people join forums to find fixes to issues which may exagerrate problems, most cars will have minor common issues though  :smiley:

All of the above... Name any car and I bet you can find common problems with them all...kseries rovers was the head gasket, mk1 focus was the synchro mesh, SAABs was the oil sludging and bulkhead splitting... In comparison, mk5 gti problems are less serious except for the cam follower, which can be sorted as part of regular maintenance with a 28 quid part.

yes i agree im probably reading into things to much, its just alot of money for me in these times, i dont want to have to worry about things going wrong especially as in my price range the cars are high mileage ones. im unsure whether to just buy an old banger cos your not bothered then lol
i think the main worry is rust  :surprised: i thought vw`s where pretty good in this area, i know most are getting them replaced for free but with my luck if mine go they will say its nowt to do with them.
im supposed to be going to collect it this aft so will have a good think about it before then

Very cheap fixes.  Id say the TFSI is a pretty reliable power plant.  if ou want unreliable get yourself a 1.4TSI!! :fighting:  :grin:

Ive had mine for 6 years now and it has done 55000 miles and has been absolutely faultless, and in fact I feel it has got better with age. Buy a car with a full service history and I don't think you'll go far wrong.

I do think VW could include things like the cam follower into the service routine, but in the case of things like the DV it's not definite this will deteriorate. I changed mine after 45000 miles and it was in perfect condition when I removed it. Again, the PCV was changed but this is a very cheap DIY job.

The only thing it is expensive on is fuel and tyres, but then that's a good sign you're having fun! Strangely I still haven't had to change the brake discs and pads, which I still find unusual for a 6-year-old car.

TBH mate, with a high milage car I'd be worried about the Clutch and Dual Mass Flywheel as the next expensive... your looking at £600+ for that right there.  But that goes for any forced induction motor these days.

The wing rust was down to the wheel arch liners rubbing on the arch, it rusts from the inside out... most often VW will replace the wings outside warranty.

Also, make sure it's up to date with the water pump / cam belt service, as that's a good £350+

cheers for that, thats put my mind at rest  :signLOL: but yeah ive thought of that just wish i could strech my budget, there seems to be some lower mileage ones for same sort of money but there miles away and pretty hard to get to without a car
think im going to bite the bullet and go for it just hope fingers crossed i havnt bought a dog :scared:


what are the recommended intervals for the cam belt to be changed? i know it got changed at 56k in 2010

You won't be having any fun then and also the repair costs are usually more than the cars worth.

As the others have said the issues mentioned are small and cheap to fix (apart from the rust, although VW should cover that). Mine had its 6th birthday this Feb, I've owned it for the past 2 years and not has any issues, although it is a low miller at only 34k. I changed the DV as precaution when getting it remapped in Jan and the old one was fine. I will most likely get the cam follower changed at the next service (for peach of mind) but am expecting it to be in good condition. I'm sure my PCV is fine as don't have any symptoms.

With the amount I have spent modding my GTI these parts are basically loose change :grin:
