It is quite funny, in the states kids drive around in 5.0 V8 AUTO's from the get go; the Rabbit is a sensible first car.  I guess they generally have wider / better roads than pothole britain though.

Well if your studying to be a Doctor you'll understand one needs to crawl before he can walk and when he masters walking he'll run in his own time!

Now surely you understand that to be a doctor you're not just going to become a surgeon?

So read what other fellow members have written and give yourself a chance and progress progressively and enjoy all the stages, in all seasons - making full use of the parents fuel card and not their insurance!

when i passed i had a 1999 civic coupe 1.6 and that felt scary
my friend when he passed got an audi s5 and crashed it 3 months later. Another friend got a golf mk3 gti 16v and crashed that, i can go on.... If your not experienced with high performance cars they can take your life. Best advice i would give is if you are sensible enough and can control not to show off then you will be fine. I would be to get something smaller then jump to a gti

Im with the rest, get a golf just not a gti quite yet, i bashed my first car up pretty bad and if had had a gti as my first car i can garruntee those crashes would of panned out a lot different. Start off in a 1.4 or something, i had a 1.2 clio as my first car and that felt plenty fast enough (although i would of liked faster) and i scared myself alot.

What age are you? I ask because if I'd had a 200bhp turbo GTI at 17 (when I passed my test) I would have killed myself.

I was immature and drove far too quickly with my mates. I crashed my dad's 1.0 litre Polo into a lamp post 5 days after my test on a wet corner. If the lamppost hadn't been there I would have continued sideways and rolled over and over into a steep ravine. I would certainly have been killed. Luckily I was alone in the car, so if I had gone into the ravine at least I wouldn't have ended my friends lives too.

Maybe you're quite sensible and mature and could be ok...I'm not preaching, but seriously be very careful. With power comes responsibility! 

me too i rolled my dads 1.0 fiat uno, i think if i had been given a gti the consequences would have been severe for either me, passengers or fellow road users

Not a bad first car to have 

I started in a 1.4 corsa - mk4 GTI and now onto my mk5 GTI.

At the time the 1.4 corsa felt like pocket rocket!

An Eddie as a 1st car! The insurance will be crazy but I guess your folks can afford it.

As others have said you need to be sensible as a new driver with 230BHP at your disposable...the peer pressure when you have mates in the car will be pretty hard to resist.

I have been watching Barely Legal Drivers on the BBC recently and they do some stupid sh*t, especially when friends are in the car.

But all said an done you will really enjoy the GTI (Ed30) as its a brilliant car
