Front Number Plate Locating
« on: March 30, 2013, 08:36:25 am »
Hi All,

I see many of the MK5 Golf GTI pictures in members rides have cars with no front plate, have you just taken them off for the pictures?

My car is in the body shop at the moment having the notch in the bonnet filled to accommodate my badgeless grille. I noticed on the new grille there is nowhere to mount the number plate.

I already have tiny plate on my Exige which I have been lucky with so far in terms of police attention but I cannot see anyone getting away with no front plate.

So what do you do and what can you get away with?

Yeap we just take them off for pics and shows. If you've got a plateless front grill (a grill with no holes in) then attach it via magnets or suction cups. If you go for a small one it will be illegal but that's up to you and how lucky you feel. It also should only be placed in its original position but some peeps put them elsewhere, IIRC also illegal.

I have both kinds and carry the one in the boot as a spare.

Yes, every Mk5 GTI comes with a number plate plinth. The previous owner must have removed it. How's your number plate held on? I'll dig out my old one and (if i can find it) if you want it PM me and it's yours FOC.

The other places are on the lower grille, or a squarer plate on the left by the foglight

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Ill be putting mine down by the left hand fog, using a small square plate. The smaller the better. :)

I guess the previous owner must've removed it. It's held on with screws I'm afraid :( Much prefer double sided tape. Thanks very much for the offer mate but I prefer the car without the holder tbh. Cheers!

I run with mine in the window (although it does look a bit "chav") but most of the time I brave it and run with no front plate at all.. if a copper pulled me, I would just say sorry I had it on the fog light grill, must have fallen off... got a spare in the back and some number plate tape so would apologise and fit it there and then..

... and then take it off again later.
