Have I been done by the spray shop?
« on: March 30, 2013, 07:14:59 pm »
Hi all,

So after posting here about a DIY bumper paint and being talked out of it, I took my bumper to the spray shop to be painted Wednesday late evening.

Got a call Friday lunch to pick it up, nice and quick I thought.

Basically - I was gently trying to fit it and some paint started flaking and it looks to me like there is no primer...what do you think? This won't last two minutes.

Opinions on what is actually on the bumper? Primer? Paint? Lacquer?

Where do I go from here, I haven't contacted the spray shop about it yet.

Any help appreciated, I paid £130 for it to be painted :(

The bottom two are of the masking tape that the headlight washer bits were stuck to. I see no primer or lacquer on there? On the bottom pic I have lifted some paint and turned it over - looks metallic blue on the back to me...!

This is black ABS plastic showing, looks silver due to flash. Bumper was brand new:

Going by the first pic , i assume the bumper was originally silver ? if so , they have simply sprayed the base/clear over the original paint. They should have flattened it back to give it a key and applied the top coats (no need for primer if the bumper was originally painted and not plastic)

Nope, a brand new ABS plastic bumper that was black.

Black plastic. I'll get some better more pics in natural light in the morning.

Thats a hidden part of the bumper so prob didn't get primed and paited the same as the visible part of the bumper.  Give them a call to confirm.

Hand it back to be fixed correctly or ask for your money back  :stupid:
If it's not broke, Mod it.....

Silver is the way !

Alex , he has said the bottom pics are masking tape that was on the headlight washer , if thats the case , i'd say the whole bumper will be the same (i.e. no primer)

I'm going to take a guess and say they sprayed the plastic primer over it (or maybe not) and then done the base/clear. It should have been given a key > plastic primer > primer > base/clear . I'd be having words with them

That definitely hasn't been keyed correctly before it was painted, and I'd day it hasn't been primer edshould have been done with a plastic primer and fully keyed to help the paint stick and stop it flaking like that, once you get one stone chip the rest will start flaking off. Take it back to the body shop and get a refund and take it elsewhere.  I wouldn't trust them again if they can't even do a simple bumper spray

I would be ringing them to double check and explain what you have found!

One more photo. This lifted from fitting flex alone, so I picked it to see behind:

That's an absolutely terrible job. Go and give them grief and get it done properly or get a full refund.
