RNS510 Firmware Update
« on: July 26, 2009, 04:53:59 pm »
I took the plunge today and I tried to update the firmware on my RNS510 today to 1100.

I went to www.my-gti.com and downloaded the .rar file and burned it to a dvd (using Roxio not Nero).  I then followed the install instructions, but basically when I put the disc into the unit it says "loading cd/dvd" but then nothing happens!

There are two versions of the file you can download (don't know the difference) and I have tried both, but I get the same result with both.  I know a couple of folks on here have done the same upgrade recently so I'm looking for some advice as to what I'm doing wrong.

I tried to update mine to FW1100 yesterday, i'm now the proud owner of a £700 doorstop...  :sad1:
I knew there was a chance of bricking the unit as some 'A' versions like mine have mainboards which can be fried during the upgrade, got as far as updating the gateway and hit the infamous '10% gateway Error 202', unit is now buggerred lol!

Imo, unless you are trying to cure any bugs the existing unit has (mine was randomly asking for the code and not auto restarting the nav route after the ignition was off), then i'd not bother lol

Off to find a new unit on ebay....  :sad1:

Sorry to hear about your situation, but at least you got further than me!

Hear what you're saying about not risking it, but my unit is factory fitted so if it dies on me I figure VW would replace it as long as I play dumb.

Just have to figure out why nothing is happening when I put the disc in!

After building up the courage to give it a go I'm disappointed that I haven't managed to upgrade yet!  Can anyone give me advice on what I need to do?

The file I downloaded is called "rns510fw1100.rar" and is about 228MB in size, this was from the my-gti.com siteusing the nrg version download link.  So it does not have the .nrg extension   How do I get the .nrg file?

Also I don't have Nero, is this a problem?  I can burn to disc using Roxio.

It a compressed Winrar file that needs to be expanded (Winrar can be downloaded free www.rarlabs.com).

As far as I am aware Roxio won't burn NEro .nrg images.

Cool thanks for the help.  Will download Winrar when I get home.  Just need to figure out how to get round the Nero issue now!

Updating your maps would have no bearing on your warranty, but I expect mucking with the firmware would...if they know thats what caused a failure!
