S3 front brake problem

Well i fitted my S3 brake setup around a month ago now and i am really impressed with the performance now they have bedded in fully. About a week or so ago however the 'S3' spring clip pinged off one side and made a ticking noise where it was touching the wheel. Managed to wiggle it back on without taking the wheel off. Unfortunately though, the same thing happened when i was doing 70 on the motorway the other day..... A mighty loud bang as it got stuck between the spokes and the caliper!!! It has actually knocked a small chunk out of my alloy  :sad1:

I dont really understand why this has happend twice on one side... All i can guess is that the bushes which the caliper pins run in are worn and the caliper is moving to much under braking? Has anyone had the same issue? Going to strip the calipers this week and investigate. I would be very happy if someone had a parts drawing fo these calipers  :notworthy:

Agreed, the caliper guide pins are surrounded by rubber bushings that could be worn.

Seems i may have found the answer to my problem i have been having. Had a repeat of my 'S3' spring coming off the other night. Only this time it was midnight in the middle of nowhere and it was snowing.... This time the rogue clip got lodged properly and disabled my car  :confused:

Anyhow it seems there are some specific differences between the S3 caliper and the R32/Cupra caliper and it is to do with the way in which the spring clip is retained. The S3 has the retaining method built into the caliper and the R32/Cupra uses the pad to keep the spring in place. I can confirm this by lookin at technical drawings of the pads for the S3 and R32. They are different. It seems i bought what i thought were S3 calipers (because they had 'S3' spring plates on) and so purchased pads for an S3. In actual fact i have R32 calipers, powder coated black!  :confused:

Well in the end this has cost me a fair lump of dosh to finally get this sorted. Ill get a picture up of the damaged wheel which i think will be scrap  :scared:

Jason im getting the feeling that the clips are the same where it matters but just the design of the plate changes. Ive ordered some standard R32 clips which should be here in a minute so i will compare them.

Dave i thought this would be the case. If i had known i was getting R32 calipers i would have just bought R32 pads!  :sad1:

Tempting but apart from the slightly different shape caliper and the spring clip, there cant be any performance benefits? Plus ive spent plenty of time on these R32 calipers making them work and look nice.

Clips and pads have arrived. R32 pads are the answer to my problem! It also appears any clip will fit as the mounting detail is the same between clips. £13 for a pair of the clips wasnt all that bad!

Do you have the part number of the clips? Are they the same for s3 / r32?
