MK5 2.0 tfsi Sounds like diesel
« on: April 07, 2013, 08:34:52 pm »
I have had my Mk5 GTI 2005 for few months now.

I love the car to bits.. BUT when the car warms up it sounds like a derv lol

From cold it sounds perfect but slowly as it gets warm the worse it sounds, only on tick over. I have read that they suffer with noisey injectors but also read it can be the chain tensioner.

Yes mine as well !
Probably is the chain and tensioner, my car is under warranty and I spoke to the garage I got the car from, they said it's normal and they all sound like that !
Can't say I impressed with that, not really sure what to do about it now......

Mine was bad when I bought it, had the chain & tensioner done and its much better, still noisy but its fuel system noise now.

My chain was fully rubber ducked, there was play in the links and I could even twist the chain...

Bonjourno Pat, I'm sure you of all people know of a good VAG Specialist to take a look at it for you!

I have a 55 plate GTI with an AXX engine, and mine is noisy at idle too. From reading around all the FSI/TFSI forums, the consensus seems to be, if it definitely sounds like a diesel from inside the cabin, then you should have it fixed. You don't hear the sound any more after 1200-1500 rpm as the load then takes the slack out of the cam chain.

The solution is to have the cam chain and tensioner replaced, and if you're unlucky the adjuster, which adds £280 to the bill - the cam chain, tensioner and gaskets run to just £100-120, but there is a few hours of labour involved, and a special toolkit is needed to do the work.

I'm sure a lot (most?) people have a diesel sounding tickover to some extent, but I'd be interested to know how many people's idle sounds like this on the inside?

Mine isn't this bad yet, but I'm making enquiries about the costs to have it fixed, as it certainly won't get any better. A local independent said all FSI engines are noisy and it was perfectly normal, and a local VW dealership agreed there is an additional noise, but they don't know what it might be... which wasn't exactly encouraging. :sad1:

Rich.

Quite a few modern 4 pot 200BHP+ petrol turbo motors sound the same; my SAAB 9-3 Aero Sports Saloon did it, but my older 9-3 Aero Classic didn't, yet they had similar Power outputs... actually the T5 engine in the early model was good for 450BHP+ The 2.3 SAAB Viggen was quiet on tick over too.  The GTI is particularly noisy though.

The ticking noise which i assume your all talking about is the noise of the pressure running through the hpfp. I was told this a few months ago by a reputable vag specialist in my area. Nothing to worry about at all.

This doesn't sound normal to me...

Is it reminiscent of the previous gen. vauxhall 1.2 engines that suffered the rattly timing chains?

My TFSI isn't that much noisier than my mate's audi 1.8t and is almost completely silent / vibration-free from inside the car.. 2008 BWA

Just watched that youtube video above, was that a TFSI!?  Mine doesn't sound like that, it was more the injector / hpfp noise I was getting at.  The vid definitely sounds like a diesel, something not right there, almost a knocking noise.  I'd be checking the follower ASAP on that.

Mine doesn't sound bad from in the cabin, certainly not like a 2.0 TDI or worse still the 1.9 TDI.
Still VAG must make some of the noisiest engines, but insulation is good.

Have been reading about all these noisy cam chains and tensioner s for a while now as my axx engine code mk5 had developed a rattle on idle but went after 2000 rpm once oil pressure built up, so ordered parts from vw, chain tensioner and oil pick up pipe and gasket, decided to do it this morning wasn't to bad to do about 2 hours. And now it's perfect. So my advice is get it done as it makes so much difference.

My 2005 gti sounded like a diesel too when warmed up, had a timing chain kit fitted last week and now the problem is solved, really happy with how the car is running now.

How much is it to change the cam chain?  Where would you recommend to take it to ?

I have this same issue with my car. I have spoke to 3 different garages all suposedly vag specialists but have never done one or heard of this problem before. Tryed to get two of them to give me quotes one said his computer was playing up and that he would give me a call with the price and the other said he didnt know how long the job would take him so he couldnt give me a price!!! Looks like ill be taking mine to vw them selfs unless I can find a decent garage!!
