Need Help Choosing New Front Discs & Pads
« on: April 07, 2013, 10:44:46 pm »
Hey up guys,

I was painting my calipers today and noticed my discs and pads on the front were looking very work / low.

looked on Euro car parts and ebay. I dont have a massive budget for  a breaks upgrade. Which are the best standard discs and pad to choose.

Or might be able a slight upgrade.

Thanks

Yeah drilled / slotted can be noisy under hard braking, they are about the same as standard no real performance benefit (from the ones linked to above, or any with the standard cally) other than looking pretty cool through the wheel.

For performance benefit:

1. Better pads: Mintex 1144 / DS2500 / Endless
2. Better Calipers: S3/R32/Cupra with bigger discs
3. Combo of 1 and 2
4. 4 Pots from 986 or similar
5. Proper BBK...

^ or possibly a Tarox set up ive heard good things!

But yea, drilled and vented is purely cosmetic really they dont do a great deal, - other than eat pads abit quicker lol!

Just look sweet!

Do the DS2500's need modifying for the GTI atall?

They compatible with ABS sensors?

Or do you mean low pad sensor.. you can simply cut the wire and loop it back on itself to remove the warning light, or disable it with VCDS.

I would buy cheap discs and the best pads you are... to be honest brakes are not something I would skimp on but a disc is basically a disc, the pad is what does the work to be honest... ATE Super Blue fluid and decent pads on Motor Factor discs would be perfectly adequate and a good improvement..

Here are my old drilled / slotted discs on my winter setup.

They were ok, but as said before no better than standard (I had them with some Tarox strada pads, which were no better than the standard pad, lol)... if I were you I'd go with the Mintex 1144 with a standard disc... as the DS2500 aren't a street legal compound unless part of a BBK. Endless pads are HUGELY expensive, at which point you'd buy the R32/Cupra/S3 calipers. :happy2:

Do performance pads last as long as cheaper alternatives or is it purely performance and shorter life?

They may last slightly less but you're talking 5k difference which is not really much to be honest..
