Random thread to post in. I think you should post your own thread about your issue elsewhere. Perhaps even in a different forum. I'm sure some people here know the Diesel engine, but the website name is gti which is a different engine to yours. Good luck

Just catching up on some older threads.

I thought the Mk5 Gti had a cam belt? Or does it have both a belt and a chain?

Cam belt from crank pulley to camshaft then a chain between camshafts up top.

Hey everyone,

Been lurking these forums since I've bought my 2005 AXX T-FSI GTI as it's a wonderful place to gather all kinds of information about these cars. But this is my first time posting, unfortunately for me, due to the timing chain issue, so I thought I might just hijack this thread.

Anyhow, my GTI decided to develop the dreaded diesel noise and I'm looking to get it sorted. Now, I know I need to do the chain, tensioner and possibly the adjuster too, but are there any other parts that I might have to get as well? Such as gaskets or covers, etc.? Basically, I'm wondering if anyone has a list of all the codes for the OEM parts needed to do the chain, tensioner, as well as the adjuster? (2005 AXX T-FSI)

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone does! Cheers in advance :))

Also, what are your opinions on getting aftermarket parts to do this? Since if I go with OEM, I'll get charged around 400-430 quid for the adjuster alone, while with aftermarket parts, I could probably get the whole set for 350-400 quid. But I am a bit hesitant about doing this, considering how vital these parts are to the engine. Perhaps just get an aftermarket adjuster at about 1/3 of the price?

Go on the how to guides section of the forum - there is a good guide done by rich that will explain the process and the tools needed.

Ahh, alright, I'll try to find it thanks! Altho, I'm not actually going to be doing it myself, but a friend of mine who's a mechanic by trade; I'm just gonna be bringing in the parts with me, which is why I was looking for a list :p

EDIT; Already found the thread, awesome :). Still, if anyone has any opinions about the aftermarket parts, I'll be happy to hear!

Do these have service intervals on like the belt? Or is it purely when it needs it dependent on the sound it makes?

Yep, no service interval, although it almost feels like there should be one; after getting my chain and tensioner swapped out, I gotta say, the tensioner looks like it's bound to start failing at one point or another. My chain was quite loose and I'm glad I went through with the repair. Didn't replace the adjustor though, but it seems like it wasn't needed either.

It now feels like I'm driving a completely different car. No more diesel noise at red lights and the car feels a lot more responsive on the throttle - it always felt like there was a one second delay between pressing the throttle and the car actually responding; now, it's almost instant  :jumpmove: . Not sure if it's just in my head though, but I don't think so  :stupid:

I had mine done as well this week and I concur it's like a new engine, not only is it quieter it also feels and sounds much smoother.

Definitely worth doing, especially on an AXX.

Just out of interest, what mileage are you on?

I'm hovering just around 86k (AXX). I'm not really sure when the noise first appeared, but it must have been around 4-5k ago. Didn't really notice it at first though, cause it just kinda creeps in on you, until it gets to the point where you just want to go up to a farmer and ask if they're looking for a used tractor with 18'' alloys.

It's a job worth doing, for sure.
